Paddock Stand

One of my GT550's has no main stand so changing a wheel/tyre is a pain in the a*se
Had need of one of thes for a long time now but looking round couldn't see one I thought would fit tidy so I made this:

I ran out of tube the same size so at the mo it's a 6 foot piece of 1-1/2" pipe just shoved on the end, the proper item will be the same size tube as the stand is made of (1-1/4") but with a threaded collar to match the already welded on spigot prolly about 4 foot in length to make it real easy to lift.

I had aircraft blue under the bench....nearly went for it painted it in red lead instead

Nice stand! One of my future "projects". But I'm more leaning to lifting the bike up at the frame. Despite having an Abba stand for my bike.

Looking at the ABBA Superbike Stand the abba stand frame dosent look that hard to make a clone of, the interesting bit would be the gubbins that attaches to the swingarm pivot that would I guess have to be machined somehow.

True, the "fitting kits" are made on a lathe, as you can see the lathe marks on them. For home use you could just make a cone (if your axle is hollow), if you don't mind a potential slight damage to your swing arm axle/nut. Another thing you could do is to attach something to the bike, and lift it from there. I've lifted some 6 bikes with my stand http://jocke.selincite.com/bikes/abba-superbikestands , which is the cool thing with the idea; you can swap between bikes. If you have a welder you'll have less need for this feature.

I'd like to lift my bike up holding the frame only, so that I can check for play in the swing arm, etc, not to mention complete strip-downs. (which I hopefully won't need for a long long time yet!)

Since you have started me looking at the centre type lift like your ABBA the more I fancy one the one man operation sounds great, sadly any machining of caps will have to wait until I get a lathe.
That said my old Kwackers have allen recessess in the swingarm pivots I could prolly cut up an allen key or two and just weld them into a bush..
I'll have to see what kind of fittings are on my R100 & R80 too.

Paul,

The Abba stands really are good. As in, really good. If you make one for yourself, you don't need the adjustability that's on the bottom rail of the Abba stand. You can also lift at other points, perhaps footpegs if your bike is not too heavy and other factors fit in.
However, the pivoting is obviously key. So is the lifting bar on the side. As is the flat bottom bit, as when you pull the bar the flat bit helps raise the bike, whilst still on the wheels, to an absolute perfect upright position. The next step is obviously to lift the bike.
My ideal lift would be a "double ABBA lift", that is have the rear part just as the Abba stand, but then linked to a smaller simliar stand up at front. So when you pull the rear lifting bar, it would also lift the front in a synchronous manner. However, I'd like the bike lifted from the frame only. I wouldn't mind bolting something onto the frame to connect to the stands.

Hope that makes some sort of sense!
