The Saab has normal and sport auto and then manual. In manual the throttle curve is changed the same as in sport...i.e more sensitive. Auto sport is a bit two schizophrenic for me...hit kick down on motorway usual drops two gears, revs it's nuts off and goes nowhere so that is why I use manual for that type of driving.

my father had a vectra that did the same...would drop right down the box, sit on the limiter for a bit, change up then sit on the limiter again, then change up again...even when you only wanted to go from 30-40...he got rid of it because it was so unpredictable

to pass the time i usually browse ebay to see what is about...found a vw passat estate with paddel shifters in it...

how good are these systems for general road use? do they offer anything practical or are they just a gimmick to make people thing they are buying a sportier car?

Got flappy paddles in the Jag. Never use them to be honest they are a gimic and the gear box looks after itself. Don't buy a car just for the flappy paddles would be my advice.
