how bad was the stink before hand?

The smell wasn't at all bad. It was just about noticeable. The cold conditions probably helped. The fact that it went from being just about noticeable, before the ozone treatment, to distinctly no smell at all the day after, seemed quite significant.
Immediately after airing the inside of the car after the 20 mins were up, by opening all the doors for a few minutes, there was a slight "fruity" air freshener-like odour, and I could still smell ozone in the upholstery, but all that had gone by the next day.
I'm sure that the real test will come next spring/summer. There was a definite old car smell inside the vehicle during the warmer months of this year, and it's not been valeted since.

sounds good , if it needs a blast every 3 months its no biggie

These work well for heater ducts and evaporators, not just in cars
Of course, they're 'one shot' whereas an Ozone generator should last for many more than three applications.

There are claims out there on the web that say that ozone works against residual Diesel smells, but other measures, like vacuuming and mopping the stuff up as much as possible, and using detergent-based cleaners first, will help.

I recently used one of those foggers that you stand on the floor and set off, close the doors and let the air con run on recirculating for 15 mins, seems to have worked well.
I thought they didn't work but turns out last time when I got one done as part of a fancy car wash, the air con was empty of refrigerant so wasn't running...

I have tried the spray can ones in the past with poor results virtually no difference. I also bought one of the fogging machines that was also poor as it left a residue on the hard surfaces and only really masked the smell.
I am sure the Ozone machine will work best

The stuff I linked to is a foam that you spray down the vents & into the evaporator core - works better than the airborne spray stuff which relies upon the recirculation function (unless you remove the partculate filter and spray directly into the aperture), the foam expands to contact every part of the air duct & control system (if you use enough!) so should be a once-only treatment every couple of years. You do need to make sure that your AC system functions correctly and the drains are clear, most vehicles operate on a reheat principle so the air entering the vehicle is dry relative to the intake air, this helps to minimise bacterial growth, most of which occurs in the autumn/winter months but gets a bit whiffy in the summer...
I can vouch that the ozone production rate from the £30 ozone generator was sufficient for me to decide I shouldn't be anywhere near that thing whilst it's operating. It uses a dielectric barrier discharge ozone production unit, and the surface discharge glow on the plates is clearly visible indoors. This particular unit consumes around 110 Watts. Total run time so far has been about 2-3 minutes.
The measured airflow was around 56 cu.ft/min, which is about half the advertised figure, but that's not too shabby, considering the price.
