I've only ever come across nitrogen being used as a shielding gas once, I seem to think it was for TIG welding a particular bronze alloy for a marine application, may be wrong as it was a very long time ago and I am now old and daft
The recomended shielding gas for TIG welding Duplex is argon with a couple of percent nitrogen in it
It's quite common to use nitrogen instead of argon for back purging stainless
