Oxyacetylene shank sizes are confusing the life out of me - Type 5, type 3, FN, DH, lightweight / HD

Does anyone understand the difference between all these torch sizes?

Type 5 seems the most common
Followed by DH for lighter work.
Type 3 pre-dated the DH ?

DH is compatible with FN.

All the above come in HD and lightweight versions?

I'm confused to hell.

Just stick with type 5, its common and the thread sizes are the same. I have a Murex Saffire type 5 with other aftermarket brand propane mixer, neck and propane head. They all fit nicely and work well. My biggest head is a 3H and roughly 25 mm diameter. It kicks out some serious heat, something like 380,000btu and you can go up to 5H

Too late someone told me type 5 is best left for dismantling ships so I went for the DH. You're right there's much fewer nozzle options available for it.

Sounds like someone was thinking about a size 5 cutting nozzle, not a number 5 torch

I’ve a number 5 and it’s only used for brazing. You can get nice small nozzles for it. I would like one of the lead torches as they’re smaller, but funds.....

I have a couple of dedicated torches for cutting but I do a lot of it
