Having owned a RT180 and then forced to sell it due to moving into a flat I'd buy one again. They may be old but they weld beautify, stable arc current and hi/lo OCV, install one in the workshop and just weld all day. Find a good one and you'll never have to buy a workshop welder again.

you obviously havent used or got one
and if u had u wouldnt part with it. mines 40 years old and well used. go on most farms and they all use them. there heavy yes but when u have 12 meter leads on them why do u need to move it. what welder do u have. even a decent mig has to be humped around on wheels with a large bottle and a short lead to torch 
Here's an answer to your question, from a previous thread.

I used to make rods and we used to test the finished product on an Oxford. The (misguided) approach was that if they ran on that they would run on anything....it was the only "hobby" machine around at the time.
Having had a few complaints we started looking at equipment and decided the old Oxford was too good to be a go/no go so we had to invest in a new machine (I wont divulge the brand) to become the "devils advocate".
Incidentally I once met a bloke in Hereford that did em up....Oxfords that is. I think I may have posted hois contact in an earlier oxford post but ive lost it now

I recently bought a 140 amp Cytringan for £75. It needed a new mains cable, an earth clamp and a bit of a clean with a solvent-soaked rag. I've had the lid off and the oil looks fine. I had been considering getting a buzz box for about £100 instead but suspect I would have been disappointed with its performance. The Cytringan is a lovely thing to use - apart from when you want to move it over rough ground/up stairs!

cytringan and .oxford were made under licence from pickhill at thirsk , the company is still around but no longer make welders

Just bought a Oxford 110 amp oil cooled on fleabay, and it has been an ambition of mine to get one, it cost me 100 quid and I tell you what it has hardly had any use, the paint is still on the earth clamp.
The delivery/ suppliers ticket is still tied to the handle, with a bit of twine, I have used it and I would not swop it for anything modern.
It is not the age it is the mileage that counts.
They may be old hat, but they knew how to make things back then, and Oxford are still one of the best welders.

the only problem with these welders running on domestic 240V is on initial start up they draw a stupid amounts of amps and can trip your fuse board if you have RCD's fitted...after the 1st milisecond then there fine all day

I get this a lot when I use my 5kva 240-110v transformer (big yellow box). Usually the fix it to reset the trip and power it on again as quickly as possible. I think there must be some residual energy or something that makes the second attempt less of a jolt. Worked many times for me anyway.

change the trip type to a type c
turning my pickill welder on or plugging a 2.5kva transformer trips the 30amp breaker 
one o these days i might change it 
all wirewound transformers have a high starting current

If only - my transformer is only used as 110v power out on site, so you plug into what's available. Lots of my work is done in occupied buildings, offices etc
I always ask where the cleaner's socket is and half the time I just got told to plug it in anywhere. They really cop the hump when you knock out the computers

i just say wheres the stickers saying computers do not turn off and why dont u save your work
