Oxford RT140 oil filled welder

Hi all

I managed to bag this little beauty yesterday at an auction for a bargain of £40 . Not in bad nick to be honest, even better after a quick spruce up(pics below).

Anyhow I have read quite a few posts on here regarding these little (heavy!!) oil boxes so I know how much love people have for them. My main question is will I be able to run it strait through the standard plugs on my garage wall without causing any damage to the sockets?? Do I just need a breaker cable beetween the welder and the socket?? I have pics in order from socket to fuse board in the house

This^^^^^^^ is the fuse box in the garage direct from the plug socket.this box runs to another box in the house(pic below)

Any information would be much appreciated thanks

That's great thanks for the advise yes I checked the plug and it does have a 13 amp fuse(no nail)

I rent a farm bungalow that was built in the 70s and I don't think much has been updated since, I think I will get an electrician friend to come and have a look!

I have it's slightly bigger brother, 180A Oxford oil filled. Tried mine initially on 13A socket & it kept blowing the fuses, I even bought a PF correction condenser but still blew the fuse. I had 30A cooker supply run into the garage (distribution board was just the other side of the wall) & no further problems.
Bought mine (£50) almost new + leads & mask from an art student who bought it do welded sculpture & the tired of the pursuit, that was nearly 35 years ago.
Great machine, weld all day without stopping. Haven't used it much since getting the Mig but it's always there ready for really heavy stuff, if needed.

I bought a Cytringan 200 amp oil cooled, years and years ago, when as a country we made stuff and these things still had value. The £40 you paid for your Oxford is a huge bargain. My Cytringan was worked day in day out for the best part of twenty five years and never missed a beat. It would blow a 13/15 amp fuse near its max but worked fine on 30 amp. Best of luck with your purchase, you won't be disappointed.

They are an excellent machine, I have a 180A Olympic Bantam why it's not an Oxford I don't know, it's exactly the same as an Oxford but blue.
Mine eats 13A fuses but you may find the 140A machine is a bit less greedy, try it and see.

Cheap for an oil cooled..i remember when prices were £2 per amp.

Bit older than my RT140 (Think mine is mid-70's). Great machines! Your grandchildren will probably get great use out of it 30 years hence!
I have run mine off a 16a blue plug but it blew fuses on big rods. Put a 30a one (back) on and it's been perfect ever since. I wouldn't like to think how many 3.2's mine's been fed over the years.
Remember the S.I.L.O rule (Short Input Long Output) for best results.

Fired the old girl up this afternoon, and I am very happy with the results, had to use some 2.5 parweld electrodes( not too good in my opionion) but burnt 8 rods in a row no problem throuh my plug socket.

waiting on arrival of some esab 3.2s in the mail then I will crank her up a bit.I was amazed at how quiet she runs, after using mig day in day out it was bliss. all in all a great day today
