Hopefully I can tap into your collective pool of knowledge again.
Currently I have a Portamig 185 which I am very happy with and was bought for welding up my car. I bought the Portamig after seeking advice on this very forum so thank you very much.
However as time has moved on I find that I have a need to weld thicker metal, up to 10mm. (mini excavator buckets) With that in mind I am looking to upgrade to a 270amp welder.
Initially I settled for the Oxford 270-1 as that should meet all my needs and is within budget. It won’t see a great deal of use and should still be able to weld thin stuff. As the plan is to sell the Portamig 185.
A couple of days ago I found that Portamig also do a 270A+ welder but I can’t find that much information. Off course I can find the technical information but reviews from users are hard to come by.
Hence why I am hoping that this forum can provide some more information.
Voltage steps and minimum setting are pretty similar. The Oxford has top loading for the wire feed whilst the Portamig has side loading. The Portamig has 4 rollers for wire feeding compared to the Oxford only having 2. Supposedly they are all assembled in the same factory by tec-arc.
Has anybody got some user experience of the Portamig 285HD? Lead times etc are similar and I am not in rush. Just want to end up with a good quality welder within my budget.
A 3 phase machine is not an option as the cost of installing a 3 phase supply to our property has been quoted at £20k+!!
Many thanks.
