I am beginning body work on a jaguar XJ-S (a pre-Ford rust-bucket), and among the many problems are rusty rear wings. I have looked at the various photos on this site, and am concerned that at present my skills are not up to the artistic level demonstrated by those who have made their own metalwork for this area. I therefore plan to buy half panels and joggle/overlap joints to existing bodywork. I am worried about the overlap providing safe refuge for metal moths, and was wondering about lead-loading the join, not only as a means of filling the gap, but also to get solder between the panels. I suspect that tinning would remain after plug/spot welding (as there is some disolving of the lead/tin in the steel and alloying) and capillary action would then suck extra solder into the overlap and prevent future corrosion.
Has anybody any experience of this?
