I'm lucky enough to have got my portamig 185 recently & am trying to restore a 2cv. I practiced butt welding .6 steel & got it to a good standard and am using Argoshield light. I started repairing the bulkhead today but not without blowing a couple of holes, the steel is soooo thin. I wouldnt be happy with the strength or standard of finish & am going to make a new bulkhead altogether. There are other repairs that need to be done and I was thinking of drilling a few holes around future repairs and spot welding a piece behind the repair and then butt welding a filler piece in, the butt weld would also attach to the back piece and also dissipate some heat and it should be stronger. is this a good idea or would it work?

Get yourself a joggler, it forms a flange that means your not butt welding, or you can practice on your butt welding. Dont try to run a weld just spot weld it, spread your spots around to prevent heat buildup. Spotting a panel in takes a lot longer but you wont have as many problems with heat build up

ArcherL you will be creating a pocket/void for moisture and water to buildup and rust from the inside out. Usual way is to use chunk of copper or ally behind to soakup the heat but if you cant reach round ie bulkhead you might have to comeup with a way of proping some copper behind where you are welding beforhand or at a pinch a small joggle in the new piece to give a bit more metal to weld to. MM do a hand operated and an air operated ones that also have a hole punch for the spot welding. Worth a though?
