Overhead mig welding

Hi everyone, I'm a new member, just after a bit of advice.

I've been mig welding for a number of years and last year did my c&g level 1+2, so I'm fine doing t fillets and lap fillets flat and vertical, but I'm struggling a bit on overhead with the same joints - I tend to keep the voltage high but turn the wire feed right down, like I was doing a vertical up, but the results are a bit hit and miss. Anybody got any tips? I'm mig welding thickish mild steel usually 6mm with 0.8 wire overhead t and lap fillets.

For overhead you can usually use the same parameters and angles etc as you would for welding in the flat position

Hi,

I can't say I've ever changed settings for doing overhead on a car. You do need to keep an eye on the weld-pool though as it'll drop if it gets too big.

Either slightly faster torch speed, or as some people here suggest lower wire speed, or maybe pulse it a bit, ie, if the pool looks too big then stop welding for a second to let it solidify.

I've done runs of say 3 second weld and one seconds pause, probably an inch at a time.

I tend to up the wire speed and move faster.

Gotta agree with Shenion, last thing you want to do is turn the wire spedd down, if anything increase it a bit to make the weldpool cooler/less fluid

yeh keep the amps up and the volts the same as you would have for downhand. dont angle the torch too much either
