At my work we have a cheapo Argos machine in the toilets.
Id flatly refuse to wash mine at home, personally.

Damp sheds etc won't hurt a washing machine, I have had a Hotpoint automatic standing outside uncovered for washing my work clothes. We do a lot of washing at home and it started getting a bit rumbly in the drum bearings so we bought a new one. My wife never liked putting my work gear in the washing machine so I put it outside the kitchen window. Water feed comes from the garden tap and the outlet drops in the drain outside. All we do is put the plug inside a freezer bag to stop it filling with rain water.

Been going strong for 4 years or more, had to replace the one in the house since it went out there.

use the household machine, when you fill the powder tray for pre wash put a small squirt of fairy liquid in as a de greaser, in the slot for softner,put half dose of softner(keeps machine smelling clean) and also a dose of dettol anti bacterial wash designed for washing machines, normal dose of pwder in other section.
wash at 60 degrees. will come out clean and machine is still clean afterwards. job done.

One of my regular jobs is cutting off large concrete foundation piles. This is usually done on clay (with copious amounts of water) so my overalls get covered in it. I hang them over some heras fencing and blast them with a jetwash, wring them out then either hang them up to dry in the sun or take them home and wash them properly.

Can't find the product on their website at the moment but I'm sure there's other bars out there with similar properties.

Does an amazingly good job. Some of my old greasy stained work jeans are like my normal wearing out jeans.

I wondered that as well. The oil and grease makes them waterproof

I solved this problem years ago

I used to own a chain of Launderettes, and when I closed one, a girl who kept her horse on my field persuaded me to keep one of the 35 lb load IPSO machines for her horse blankets. We installed it in my workshop and although the horse is long gone, I use the machine for dirty overalls.

Incidentally when I had the Launderettes, people who washed horse blankets, and particularly filthy overalls, had to pay for a second wash to clean the machine for the next customer

donate them to your local charity shop, they will then wash and iron them and you can buy them back for a couple of pounds

I think it's outrageous to expect fitters to clean their own overalls at home(unless the soiling is very light), PPE is the employers' responsibility; chin your gaffer and tell him get a washer installed. Unless they're proposing to give you an allowance for wear and tear on your domestic washer it's sponging.
