Oven trouble..Kitchen

There are some clever types on here so I think it is a good place to start for some simple advice.

Our double oven has started acting up. The upper/grill is fine, but the lower main is reluctant to hold the set temperature. That is, set the T* and after a while it will drop to 160*. Set it again and the same will happen, until at some point it will retain the setting.

Model: Whirlpool AKZ161/1X/01

Upper controls to the right, lower main controls, Gemini 2C, to the left.

The spares are readily available, but power board £127, controls £100, so not exactly cheap, compared to a new one.

Since it is open now, for part numbers, I will give it a clean, and put a picture or two up if required.

I don`t know if yours is "electronic" with circuit boards etc, but I had a similar thing happen on mine (different make) and it was the thermo couple in the oven. Cheap enough to buy, but had to dismantle the oven to replace it. Worked perfect after that though.

I suppose to a certain extent it is 'electronic' but I have not been able to find the main oven thermocouple as a spare.

No help with your problem but a lot of ovens have a mercury vapour valve rather than a thermocouple (that work through expansion rather than an electro magnet)

try swapping the thermostat from one oven to the other, and see if it works...

lol - the point which I missed off was, they're cheap enough to buy a complete one for any spares you might need

All the one I have seen are either too far away or far too expensive. One on evilbay now has the same problem.

I will pull the thing out again and have a look at the main thermocouple.

?Any pointers MonkyHarris?

proceed ...if your competent with electrical stuff,

a thermocouple ..switches a gas valve ...?

disconect the oven
take the back off,
pull the thermostat out of the bottom oven .
power up the oven, turn the bottom oven on... and it should get hot as there is no stat in there to switch the element off...
if this is the case you need a new stat they are around 25 bucks and quite easy to replace with 2 wires and a capillary

I thought that the thermocouple is the measuring end and the thermostat is the sensing part which then controls another operation. I have not checked so will bow to your expertise MonkyHarris.

?Will any thermo**** do, since there is a different mechanism for switching the the electricity on and off?

they are sometimes on ther own knob,temp selection,

or they fit on the back of the the oven selector switch

remove yours and compare it ,
there are lots more on ebay ...

I assume that I can remove the capillary and probe and refit them to wherever I find the dubious one attaches.

the thermostat is quite easily replaceable ...

I stopped at 0.15s since , as I stated in my first post, though I got my left and right transposed, 'Lower Main Controls Gemini 2C' . It is not a standard thermostat switch. thats an elecronic sensor for the curciut board ...a piece of cake to change ...
if thats the problem part ..?
you could still swap the top and bottom oven sensors to test each one, before you buy one ...
