outside electricity

so i want to put an outdoor socket on drive, my plan was to spur off a socket in the living room and put the outdoor socket on the wall directly behind (hope that makes sense)
as its outside is this covered by part p? or can i just do it myself?

also i planned on making up an extension lead so as to get some temporary power up to the shed until i get it wired up properly (and so i dont have to have to have the patio doors open all the time for a cable to run through).

i wanted something that doesnt matter if i leave it on the lawn over night coz i cant be bothered to bring it in or if it starts raining. the only thing i can find other than swa that looks like it would do the job is the stuff they make for pond etc but that only seems to come in small diameters?

just wire one in with 2.5mm cable as long as its fed from an rcd if not use an external rcd socket . the flex to use outside is arctic cable 2.5mm or 1.5mm 3 core

it is fed from a rcd so thats not an issue and 2.5 is what i was going to use to wire up the socket
ill have a look at artric cable

if you put a plug on it and plug it in the socket, then its an extension, so no worries

i want to keep it simple just so i can run a drill or saw in the shed while i finish it off then ill have to start get proper power up there to run my mill and a lathe when i can find one cheap enough.

not of the ring u cant unless u fit a 13 amp fused spur to feed it as it would be 32 amp direct of ring

sorry to disapoint. u cant take 30 amp sockets of a ring main either even if u could your outgoing lead would have to be 4.o mm minimum

This is why I'm often reluctant to offer much advice on how to do the electrical jobs.

1 work asked about is covered by part P which while it's totally inadequate as legislation it is still there to convict both home owner and any unlawful trade

2 there is to many important pieces of information that are unknown to give accurate information

3 homeowner is unlikely to have the kit needed to test its safe afterwards



My advice fine a decent local spark to do job and move on

what i had planned to do is to put this in myself then get a local spark in to inspect it and sign it off (at which piont i can get a quote for hooking the shed up permenatly)

i did my apprenticeship as a mechanical fitter but we did a fair bit of electrical work and was forced to undergo a fair amount of training most of which was safety based but also instalation and testing, so im confident in my instalation skills just want to ensure i am not making any stupid errors in the components i use (have always had sparkies on hand to ask in the past!)

lets not climb on the part p sh ,.,.,.t if someone is competent and does the job right in his own home theres jack sh,.,.it anyone can do about it

What makes them a can of worms? At least we don't have 6 day domestic electricians. Ours are Scottish Government approved.

The system isn't perfect by any means, but it's far better than anything else operating in the UK.

Even the Welsh didn't want the latest amendment to part P.

....but who determines whether or not you're competent? Even the IET can't agree on the definitions.
