Well I can practice with what I have anyway and get a piece of SS angle tomorrow as well but thinking that when it comes to making the batch of them I'll probably get them chopped and bent at the stainless suppliers. Will be getting a whole shot of stainless from them for feeding troughs, shoots and other bits and pieces so they should do a deal on the chopping and forming.

A bit of both really, if you've never tried it it set one up and see the difference in appearance, its not a substitute for a full purge by any means, but for non critical work is an easy solution.

Accurate Joint setup will help too, use a closed corner like this rather than an open corner, it will help to avoid over penetration

If you do ever need to purge something like that there is no need to fill the whole thing with argon, make some purging bars from sheet or you can even use heat resisting tape then stick a purge supply up it from the end

Well this is what I managed today. Kept fit up as best I could and bent a bit of the same ss to act as a heat sink.

About half way through it gets a little bit wobbly. Thats where after getting fit up fairly good, upping gas and bending the other bit to act as a heat sink, I realised I left the welder on the mig setting instead of the smaw setting like it ahould be for tigging. Still came out fairly well and I cant see much coking if any on the inside

At the end of the day I see no sugaring on the underside so regardless of what it looks like it's going to last and resist corrosion which is exactly the reason you chose stainless steel so well done you. The little bit of pen I see looks shiney and clean so that's good. Nicely done that will last a very long time.
