outdoor woodwork..sealant for gaps

weve got a wooden lean to /conservatory thingy on the house , i need to give it a rub down and paint

in the past ive tried frame sealant and silcone ....neither seem to cope with the expansion / shrinkage when the weather goes hot -cold and ends up coming away

any suggestions for what to use? either over a painted finish or under it if overpaintable?

I have the same issue on a shed with boards that leaked, good quality silicon coming loose and hanging out of the joints, a passing builder type guy said it should be flexible bath sealant, damn expensive stuff so not tried it yet... may get a tube before winter sets in and give it a go.

you could do with a non curing sealant so it moves with the wood only one i can think of is one we used in the caravan industy which is carafax idl99 but im not sure if its any good for wood but an email to carafax would answer that, its sticky stuff and we used to heat it up before use

Sikaflex is good stuff, it sticks like you wouldn't believe as long as the surface is clean and dust free, and a bonus is it can be painted.

Just how much movement are you talking about ???

sikaflex is good but dont know if it would stay bonded when the wood became damp

I find lead mate sticks to anything.....not cheap though.

It sounds like you need a low modulus sealant as they are designed to cope with movement between the surfaces being sealed.

So far NO NAILS is working on mine and some of it has been subjected to high temps. Mind you its covered on the outside with building paper and polythene.

If the surface is moist use silkaflex they do a marine one which is expensive but, sticks to anything and lasts. Various colours too.

People have been using linseed oil based putty to seal glass into window frames and fill the gap between frames and brickwork for hundreds of years. It does indeed smell, can be messy and needs redoing every 20 years or so, but it works.

If you use sikaflex be careful what you choose as it can shrink when it cures.

Silicone is a waste of time on wood. The bond weakens over time and it comes away. Use polyurethane
