Open door with jammed mortice lock

You were lucky! When the bolt has rollers in it, life gets difficult.

My neighbour has twice locked himself in both of his karseys and I’ve had to cut the bolts. His doors were solid oak, as were the frames, so I couldn’t damage anything. I used a pad saw with a hacksaw blade.. the doors were also bare wood and they’d tried WD40 and stained the wood. I had to carefully scrape them because glass paper gave a different finish.

Interesting. What's the point of the rollers? Is to literally rotate in the bolt so a blade can't catch them?

supposed to stop them being hacksawed but no one oils them its fit lock and forget them

€75 lighter for a new lock now. Thankfully it's not me paying this time.

The guy said it was a very specific lock because of the offsets etc and was a special order.

In reality though, the real reason is that Ireland is just damn expensive. In basically every way...

So I made the repair.. (I.e. fitted new lock). I decided I may aswell fit the plate on the jam also, as the previous one was a bit messed up..

The jam is in a bit of a sorry state after what would appear to be multiple attempts over the years. At a minimum it could do with a london bar on the inside the distribute force along the jam. There is an intruder alarm fitted, and a reed switch on the door. That reed switch will only trigger once they have broken in.. If I end up renting that unit it would be nice to attach a shock sensor, so if somebody kicks or rams the door it will trigger, meaning the alarm could be triggered before they even gain access.

Also.. Would fitting another lock midway down between existing and ground? Would that help take some of the load if being rammed / kicked?

... And I suppose finally. For a hell of a lot more security, the jams and door would be replaced with steel. And the locking bolt/receiver in behind a recess in the jam to make direct access for cutting/brute force difficult?

put a metal bar down it instead that wood will give far quicker than you think

though your frame is close to splintering off anyway really you want another frame asap

but if your going to do that swap up to a metal door build instead

Agreed on all. I didn't put in that piece of wood. Was already there.

All I did was just replace the lock hardware as it was bust. We only discovered it when I was viewing.. and because I know the guy who lives far away, I said i'd come back and sort it as it's up the road from me. (He is a friend of a friend, so I was trying to be nice too)

If I end up taking the unit, i'll look to have it secured a bit better.. I might suggest that if he buys the steel I could make it all up..

I would need to figure out if my skills are up to that first.

i think on he there is people that bought doors cheaper than they can make them from a company on line

Oh wow that's something.

I'd be happy to experience building it.. as long as the cost of steel wasn't multiples more expensive than off the shelf.
