Oooooh! Welding 1932 Morris cast iron engine block

Not exactly what I wanted to have to do. The previous owner removed a water elbow from the block and ripped a piece of the water jacket off that will need about 1cm x 1cm replaced to allow the studs to be put back in.
So, Tig braze with SifBronze 8? Bridge the gap fully or Tig in another piece of cast, suitably drilled? Grind out lots or try to keep the gap as small as possible? Just about visible in this pic.

Beautiful car, sorry I don't think I can be of much help with the problem though.

Except to say, that an alternative could be not to braze or weld the repair, but consider using a modern bondable repair, like Belzona? Might at least not risk further damage or warping through heat addition.

So, use some Belzona 1121 to glop a large bolt in situ so that the water casting can be slid down the bolt? Using a bolt instead of a stud and a repaired casting?

Hmmmm. Certainly worth a further look. I'll email Belzona tomorrow after I get back from hospital (2 x slipped discs)

It is possible I've not understood the problem (too stupid to understand it from your pic) - but all sorts of non welding repairs could be done.

Can you show a clearer pic?

Hope your back is on the mend, sounds a touch uncomfortable!

I've just seen the MRI image of my back. Not nice! 2 slipped and protruding discs, a vertebra which has slipped forwards by a good 5mm and a couple of stress fractures of one vertebra. Anyone got a phonenumber for Belzona?

Anyway, the Morris enthusiasts say that they usually just stuff a brass strip in the hole with 2 studs let into it and splodge some araldite in to hold it all in place. Bodgery at it's finest!

i think if i had to do this i would make a modified elbow, drill and tap the outer gasket face on the block put new studs in and away you go, i dont have a load of confidence in bodges with araldite, if they fail and your miles away your stuffed, its recovery only

Very nice, saw it on the PWMN site.
If you want a really proper job, it would be possible to stitch a new piece of cast iron in, however, it won't be cheap.

Rob, there is a great how to tutorial section detailling how to repair a cast iron casting with Mig brazing. Look here http://www.mig-welding.co.uk/cast-iron.htm mig brazing was used to repair a cracked lathe casting.

Thanks, guys. Several options being worked through at the moment. Leaning more towards the bodgery end than the proper/expensive end.

When considering a bodge. I always ask myself: What if it fails? How much hassle will it cause me? and would it have been easier and cheaper to do it right in the first place.

I should think what was suggested on the PWMN would work fine. (Its holding the water outlet on our 1932 OHC LWB one fine... ) Just a flat steel plate with a stud welded to it that goes behind where the stud used to go. I think the araldite is only to hold it in position, until you get the nut on.
