as title really second go with new inverter in the dark outside tonight lol lo and behold it started peeling like a good un can anyone say whether the actual weld is good enough or is it only when cut in half and tested with chemicals you can tell?

any how here ya go 3.2mm rods, 85 amps, 10mm plate steel i got a small u shape weave on tried a christmas tree but i'm cack handed lol

then with the slag removed......

so then comments please and of course constructive criticism.

wallopadonkey, nice work heres some advice, try not to weave on the downhand. the xmas tree and 'U' are for vertical up work. When i do need to weave on the downhand i weave side to side not in a U shape.
9 times out of 10 downhand run a wider weld in stringers.
Also about the weld being good enough, its hard to tell to be accurate BUT if it looks right then you have done everything right i.e amps, rod angle etc etc therefore it SHOULD be ok

thanks very much i suppose what i am really saying is am i going in the right direction and if so will crack another 30 or so rods off the same way
i am dragging the rod and am trying to hold the rod near vertical slightly tilted in the way of travel but trailing.
the weave was more because its 10mm thick metal so i wanted to get more heat into the metal (not sure if right or not!)
i got some peelers this way but they dont seem to do it if i just go straight

stringers are they just a straight run?

Are these 'peelers' just a sign of a good continuous weld with ideal cooling so that the slag peels off ??

Or just lucky !!!

Peelers usually mean that the parameters are correct, rod type, size, brand, amps, travel speed, angle or dangle etc.
A good welder with even a half-decent rod can get the slag to peel nearly every time.

yes a stringer is just a straight run only time you really want to weave is vertical up (although you can do it in stringers!) for more heat turn your juice up or if your as high as your set will allowe drop a rod size. try doing a T fillet downhand just doing it in stringers start with 1, then take the slag off and put 2 over that and so on. its a good practise.
I find you only really get 'peelers' with rutile rods (6013's) stainless steel and lo hi rods might break free from the metal but rarely peel
Keep burning them rods

thanks fella so should i make a right angle then for a t fillet or is it an upside down 'T' what thickness steel shoud i use?
i have got 1,2,5,8 and 12mm plate in shed
and is a 90 degree or 45 degree?
will set it up have a go and post pics

Heres an example of a multirun fillet, root and 2 capping runs, the peeler is the first cap stringer, thats why its of set to the lower plate, 2nd pic is finished joint, plate is 10mm thick

hi wallopadonkey, Tig Paul has given you a great example there (im always too lazy to take and post pics!) i would go for the 5 or 8mm plate and yes an upside down "T" shape. at 90 degrees just as TIG paul has he has put 3 beads down in total. but you can carry on building it up. put your first run in like normal then lay the 2nd bead half on your weld and half on the bottom plate.
remove any slag, then put your 3rd run ontop of that so it flows in nicely with the 2nd run and half of the top plate. then keep going! post pics and let us know how your getting on
