Online data storage.

Ages back I looked into a separate hard drive and had a PITA experience with it.
Been meaning to have another go.
Interfering wifey has suggested the Amazon Cloud Drive http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/feature.html/ref=sa_menu_acd_lrn1?ie=UTF8&docId=1000655803
Seems to be some sort of online data storage system. Kind of makes sense to me . means if you have a house fire your data is still safe.
Prices seem ok eg 50gb of data for £16.00 per year.
How would I know how much space I need? and could I set it to back itself up automatically. I would need an auto thingy as I am to stupid to do it myself.
or are there any other idiot proof services like this.

Personally I'd never have my data stored by a third party, who knows what can happen in the future ? I have a Seagate 1TB external HD and so far it's been no problem at all.

50Gb isn't a huge amount of space when you look at the size of today's hard drives but it ought to be plenty for backup purposes, photos, documents, any rare music you have etc.
As you say, much more secure in the case of fire, theft etc and tbh, at just over a nugget a month it's pretty good value!
I'd imagine it would be pretty simple to set up and maintain.

That's all very well but if that goes up in smoke or gets stolen then you still lose everything.
I keep meaning to back my stuff up and keep it on disc in my work locker.

Chunko, that's another option for you, keep a set of backup discs in your workshop.

If you went with the online storage, would you also have the convenience of being able to access it anytime, anywhere, and with any device......?

Say you are visiting a client, they are interested in a having a piece of work made.... you have finished articles available on your website, but log into your online storage, and you could access all your work in progress pictures too....?

As they call it a 'cloud drive' then yes, you would be able to access it from anywhere on any compatible device.

I click on 'Computer' on the windows button and it says
'OS' C) 175 of 283Gb free. Does this mean that I have used up 108Gb and would need to take that much space? I dont think so but I am not clear on these things.

Some of the HD space is taken by the operating system.

Check eBay for a NetGear Stora, run it with two drives (raid1) then half the chance of a total fail, connect it to your router and get remote access free...

I use a Synology NAS drive running 2 x 1TB in raid1 but haven't worked out how to remotely access it yet

JUST A THOUGHT CHUNKO... HOW MUCH SPACE DO YOU HAVE WITH YOUR WEB HOSTING SERVICE?

... may be able to create an new directory on your site ( hidden) & store there.... it's what I am planning on doing. that way I get effectively cloud access, and online backups from my webhost..al except pics, 200gb is kust too much to upload...

Sorry boys, none of the last three posts make any sense to me at all.
I am simply after a safe haven to keep all my photos and files backed up and after starting this thread I also like the idea of being able to access them from other computers.

You get 2Gb free space with dropbox and it automatically syncs to any pc/laptop you log on to it with. All you need is to go there and reg with your email address. THey also give bonus storage for stuff like linking to friends dropbox or doing their customer satisfaction survey.

Robot you need to read up on port forwarding in short you need to open ports in your router for example if your NAS is on 192.168.1.4 port 80 you need to go into your router and look for port forwarding or game sharing then set the IP 192.168.1.4 to point and open port 80 there is loads of info on google re this subject to get your NAS running for remote access.

chunk you don't need to know any of this to run a NAS (network attached storage) in your home mate any NAS drive can just be plugged into your router load the software and away you go, most are aimed at novice users that just want safe storage, the joy of twin drive storage devices is you can set them up to run different levels of RAID basically two drives are mirrored in the system so if one dies you can just replace it and it will rebuild or re mirror the lost data...

And that's just the point and downside of remote/cloud storage is uploading it! not all of us defo not me have fast fibre broadband, I like to have my files close to hand and more than one backup, the joy of NAS is its fast and safe also you can shut it down and use it when you need to back up, that's all I use NAS for most of the time, safe backup...
