I've had leads with moulded on plugs, with bare copper strands poking out of the moulding, and others in a 13a format with no fuse what so ever.
I've a tote bin of 13a plugs that regularly gets raided, and a rack of drawers with a range of suitable fuses.
I've a shelf of cables with 13a plugs on with various termnations - bare wires, boot lace ferrules, ring terminals and 1/4" lucar connectors - very handy when testing things.
. . . how do you manage without . . . .

Buy a three phase machine tool and you'll need to wire a plug to feed the VFD.
Replacing knackered cables on 50 year old motors or old drill bargains that you've acquired.
Done loads of plugs for the garage/workshop. Probably none in the house to be fair.

I've always had a go, especially if the alternative is spending loads of money.
When our 25yr old washing machine started playing up I extracted the PCB and found 2 broken solder joints.
Resoldered them, reassembled, tested & all good, that was 12 months ago & still going strong.
Saved me spending (£500 ?) on a new one.
It's a Bosch, I believe they don't make them to last like this any more...
Just waiting for the brushes to need replacing again; they only wear out every 10 years.

My two both learned to wire a 13A plug when they were at school, they are now twenty one and twenty four, I am guessing they would have been eleven ish at the time. I remember it well as one of them proudly presented me with a 13A plug complete with six inches of three core flex attached, which I did think was a little un safe!
He is still here, and I asked the question. 'Around 3 or 4' TBH, It doesn't matter how many he has wired up. It's the fact that he can do it in the first place.

It's a common point of failure on Henries.I've done our cleaners vacuum cleaner lead THREE TIMES
(bust at other clients premises)
I think she yanks it about by the lead - luckily she provides her own !

i got 2 henrys out of a skip at a pub and one from a school with just flex breaks near the plug

Not disputing the fact that he can do it. just trying to work out how relevant these "yesterday" skills" are in todays world and how important it is to teach them especially with what seems to me the endless stream of new skills that are required today. Eg what is the point today of teaching anyone to wire a plug when it is impossible to buy anything without a plug . I personally mourn the loss of these abilities but can see why. I'm sure we have all got a drawer full of plugs sockets that we dip into on regular occasions to resurrect a dying or poorly piece of kit but i get the feeling that we are a fast disappearing breed. On a more serious note someone recommended a cable that is good for replacing damaged /perished hand tool cables ,angle grinders etc. Does anyone know what is best to use. ( for once not trying to b funny)
Thing is, if you want to make anything, wiring a plug can be a good skill to have. If people's horizons reach as far as buying a bigger and bigger telly, then not so much. I would rather people learned in order to be able to look a little further.

till the wire gets fatigue and snaps . 1st thing you do is cut the lead back a few inch and fit a new plug

Maybe just a bit of ability to tell the wrong from right there too though. So many people spout stuff, as in life, as though it's gospel . . . when it's complete and utter . . .
