One handed welding?

If you haven't welded before all you will be doing is adapting the process to enable you to learn. I had gout in my right foot when my Tig arrived and used my left foot on the pedal to start with, hardly a disability in comparison but it didn't stop me learning. Aylesbury isn't a million miles away from Staines and I would only class myself as an experienced amateur but you are more that welcome to have a sit down and ruin a couple of my tungsten to see where the problems lie for you.

I once saw a one armed steel fixer-not steel erector-steel fixers fix reinforcing bars in place with wire and end cutting knips-you would say he would not be up to speed if you saw a non handicapped fixer working but he was- so I'd say you can crack tig-good luck.

If you have enough dexterity in your bad hand to feed wire, and it doesn't take much, you can be a kick ass TIG welder. Don't listen to anyone who says you can't.

Cheers, not wishing to sound totally fick but as I read that, wire, stick and rod ...
I take it they are all one and the same thing?
Today I've been trying "Air TIG" (much like air guitar but less vigorous) and feel short movement will be ok.
For sure now I deffo want to give this a try

Yeah, filler wire, filler rod... Same thing. Stick is usually slang for the electrode in MMA welding; ie. 'stick welding'.

Hi

I should add that yes I have two hands, but after a motorbike accident one hand/arm doesn't work very well.
So can I still learn the art of tig welding, but single handed ... if possible?

One handed welding isn't like one handed web browsing is it? I know welding can be exciting but that may be stretching it a little! (or a lot!)

Gotta start somewhere so have bit the bullet on this and done the dead on a used ac/dc tig
Also after reading various posts on here have also decided on suitable helmet and gloves
So all being well we should be good to go soon, I hope

I've got a bust up shoulder joint and a fair bit of nerve & arthritic damage that's still with me 35 yrs on and getting worse .
I don't have much cuff rotation or ability to extend the arm forward for more than a few seconds so my arm tends to be kept tight into my body ... as a result I have about 300 mm left to right movement with it & 150 degrees of left wrist and elbow movement combined .( I'm also wrecked ...spinally these days )

For several years after the accident of 1978 my left arm was a floppy painful paperweight with a very weak hand on the end .
I was teaching myself electronics and radio & TV repairs etc. so I could get on recognised training courses to get my City & Guilds for Industrial Electronic test servicing & maintenance with a radio & television course included along side the training . ( got them all with distinction ) .

When I wanted to do delicate things like soldering on delicate fault found circuit boards I used one of the four foot long flexible metal shower hose pipes with a full length of stripped out twisted 4 mm copper wire through it to give it rigidity so it would stay in place when bent accordingly .

On the tool end it had three 2 inch long ( 50 mm ) crocodile clips soldered to more 4 mm wire lengths which were about 4 inches long , bent at almost any angle that suited the task in hand angles these were fastened pointing forward on the hose with stainless steel jubilee clips , I use to wrap the tube around my shoulder and arm to get it near the work and then clip the wires into the croc clips and then solder away .
Whilst sitting down I soon be came quite adept at holding the shoulder and arm rigid & using my body & spine to make the delicate movements . Standing and doing soldering was a little more difficult but like the initial way soon became much easier.
