I acquired this timber when my grandad passed away with no idea what I was going to do with it (I don't think he did but he was a hoarder like most of us)

Sos my question is do we know what type of wood it is, and if it would be any good for turning anything or making anything from before I turn it into fire food.

But must be worth a bob or two, otherwise your Gramps might have binned it…Don’t Burn It!! ( heathen…. )

Maybe take up carpentry?….

This was my thinking, he was a joiner by trade but retired early due to health but always tinkered about, and he had a stove for heating the house and water so for him not to burn also makes me think it must be useful.

Couple of them are oak. Think there may be some beech in there as well If you are on face book, there is a wood identification group on there

Second pic looks like oak to me. The rest will need to be cleaned up a bit to identify it.
I made a complete bed frame out of oak reclaimed from various skips. I still raid skips for useful timber, got some lovely mahogany, oak and pitch pine all waiting for suitable projects. A lot does end up on the fire though. The very fine dust from old hardwoods is horrible stuff though, gets in every unprotected orrifice so wear PPE if you start working it.

Second one going by the burn colour looks like mahog, iroko or miranti

Big squares look like oak

Il try clean up the ends this weekend and see what they clean up like and sort them into types...

I’d say Iroko and Oak too. If that’s woodworm in the first picture remove and burn it quickly and inspect everything else in the area in case it’s live…

You could stick that on Marketplace rather than burn it. If it’s been around for a while there might be some rare pieces now - that second picture for instance could easily be afromosia, which you can’t buy now. Burn the pieces with woodworm and sell the rest.

It's not wood worm this small piece has been used for all sorts, the hols are drill holes.
Iv had it at least 6 years stored in garage, and iv no idea how many years he had it before that so it's well seasoned
