I can put a pair of speakers in the mancave, a pair in the machine room and a pair in the mancave extension. If the tv can be wired in to it so I can listen to the box in any of the three zones that would be great

To answer the OP, never mind what your wife says, size IS everything. Bigger is better. Biggest subwoofer you can fit, wired up to the biggest sub amp you can find. Never mind the fiddly detail stuff, you don't just listen to music, you need to FEEL it...

scart sockets give a line out stero signal this can be sent via wifi or even a wired connection

the thing is not all tvs give a line ouptu signal however some tvs do and then you can record live tv on a recorder

The box full of bits turned up today, speakers look a tad small but that probably means very little so I will cobble it together and give it a dummy run.

Yes, if you have a line-out port on the laptop then I'd connect that to line-in. I.e. if it's coloured connect up the lime-green port.

Probably irrelevant on some cheap eBay stuff but back in the day there was a difference between them, line-out was meant for driving other equipment which had the amplifier built into it. The other ports were for driving speakers directly.
