I've seen one or two of those, they used to use them in places like rubber mills in the middle of nowhere in Sumatra. Dead reliable, but you needed a huge building to put them in and they needed a lot of routine maintenance. By which I mean stripping down and rebuilding quite regularly. Still, lovely beasts though!

The Naval dockyard and a few other places used them as back up power supplies.
Like to be run, but don't like to be run when dirty air is around.
Of yes, check the 0 volt binding.
It will bite.

I worked on a few of those when i was an apprentice at sea. One threw a lag out of the crank case, wasnt pleasent.

All big medium speed diesels need lots of maintenance! Noisey bloody things, give me a slow speed two stroke any day.

A farmer up the road who we used to buy feed off was into old cars and tractors and the like. One day we were there i had a sneeky peek into the shed and there was a large engine (nowhere near as large as the one in the link). It turns out it was a tank engine. He told us he was going to build his own genny and go self sufficent. He did build it, but the fuel consumption was massive, cost him huge money to run so it was given the chop.

We have a 1200kva generator powered by a huge v16 cummins. Fuel consumption is 160l an hour.

In early 70's I worked in the laboratories of Royal Doulton Sanitaryware researching a certain colour they couldn't successfully develop. Part of my duties were general checking of various aspects of the factory and in one of the buildings were a pair of massive generators similar sized to that powered by Rolls Royce diesels. For those who don't remember in early 70's power cuts were common and businesses such as Royal Doulton who relied on electricity for kilns etc had back up generators. There were hetz meters and the cycles used to drop before power cut off so the gennies would kick in to ensure constant supply.

A farmer I know has an old T55 V12 tank engine hooked up to a 27KVA genny set.
The engine is noisy, but it is hidden in a sound deaden hut. The "Beast" as it is called is very tolerant of the fuel it goes in.
It is not nice when we have run it on old chip shop oil.

I think tank engines are designed to run on nearly any flammible liquid aren't they ?

It's name is ETSL8 yet it looks like a vee engine which would make it a V16 given the number of injectors. Anyone know for sure? It's about the size of the main engine on the ships I work on, although they're all inline 6s rather that vees.

The Russian tank engines are robust, simple and next to indestructible, Torpex will break them of course.
But they will run on dirty fuel even mixed fuel.

I have bean told that some NATO engines, specially the gas turbines are fuel sensitive. But the old British tank engines were not as bad.
The Leyland engine in the Chieftain tank was often slated as being rubbish. But it was not run hard enough or long enough, just look how effective the Jordan Army Chieftain tanks were.

The Big engines in the dock yard and other places were run up and had full loads put on them at least once a week. Only issues I saw was one case were the coupling doughnut between the engine and genny parted company.

When I was at Mercury we had 3 WW2 age genny sets to give emergency power. They were old RAF search light sets, about 30kva. They used to power the 120"/ 5 ' search lights. Nice kit.
Hand start. 7 turns with decompression lever lifted.
Air start, from a on board compressor system.
Or shot gun cartridge start, scary. This was because the breech was a pig to seal.

Oh happy days.

I've got a mate who drove Chieftains in the Cavalry; the L60 was badly designed rubbish and the offence was compounded by the installation being an utter dog's breakfast; an engine swap was a regular event but even a good crew took upwards of 6 hours to get the old one out, the Bundeswehr chappies with their Leopards had unitised powerpacks and a swap could be completed in a couple of hours if they were on the ball. The Jordanian Chieftains had the same powerpack as the Challenger 1, a David Brown transmission and a Perkins/Rolls Royce V12.
