Use emery paper to clean the mating surface of surface rust, then use either RTV silcone or Blue Hylomar to coat the core plugs mating surface and tap home using a suitable size socket with a hammer...

Expand the core plug a small amount prior to fitting, it makes them a really snug fit.

I find if you clean these up with a small rotary wire brush they seal OK.

I have turned up on lathe several steped drifts for the job - never made the "clearance mistake" - you wanna leave a good 1mm on the inner/lower diameter thou.

Same here, I prefer making up a drift that pushes on the rim of the core plug and stops flush/level with the block or head face. Sockets are ok but you need to be careful that the core plugs go in straight and not too deep,a few minutes on the lathe takes the guess work out of it.

Last core plugs I replaced, cut down a broom stick and banged them in with goo, can't remember what goo, probably loctite?

Engine still running sweet.

Mine didn't for a long time. It was used for more than bearings, core plugs and similar.

Not it sits in a drawer, waiting until I need it again.

Are the core plugs the dished ones or the just domed type? both need a good clean on the mating surfaces. Hylomar or stag would be my preferred sealants, dished type knocked in with a decent fitting socket, And domed type hammer to the centre,

Blimey how much is that kit now??? I’m sure that was on sale with a different name just a couple of years ago for absolute peanuts. I bought one purely for use as stock for the lathe as it would have cost more to buy alloy bar.

In the dim recesses of what passes for a brain, I recall if you really cleaned the block a new plug [which was slightly convex] used to be fitted by giving a drift held in the middle and belt with a hammer, they were a tight as a crab's rectum at 500 fathoms.

In the dim recesses of what passes for a brain, I recall if you really cleaned the block a new plug [which was slightly convex] used to be fitted by giving a drift held in the middle a belt with a hammer, they were a tight as a crab's rectum at 500 fathoms.

You're doomed now John, there will be the inevitable comparisons of tightness!

I just remembered my Father had a small tin of sealant called "O So Tight" that may still be in the shed.

With all the rubbish coming out of the far east, I would suggest that you check that your freeze plugs are in fact brass by filing an outer edge. A few years ago I replaced the plugs on my Kubota tractor and they didn't last a year. The plugs from the tractor dealer were pot metal with brass plating. I replaced these with "proper" plugs from an auto parts shop which cost less than 1/4 the dealer price.
