replacing core plugs on an old engine what would you do to make sure they had a good seal . a Loctite b jb weld c other

If you make a stepped punch to fit them, leave a good internal clearance for when the core plug closes up. I can still hear my Father laughing at his mistake!
Clean the block up well.
Chill the core plugs in fridge, a smear of blue hylomer.
Using a socked drift them in.
Or this does as well.

To lazy to go and take a picture of my kit.
Works for me.
Ooh I like, another thing for the 'one day' list...
Yeah, agree, but one day when you need it...I can almost guarantee most of that set would sit on a shelf unused!
Best made to suit when needed. Shiny though!

You're doomed now John, there will be the inevitable comparisons of tightness! In the dim recesses of what passes for a brain, I recall if you really cleaned the block a new plug [which was slightly convex] used to be fitted by giving a drift held in the middle a belt with a hammer, they were a tight as a crab's rectum at 500 fathoms.
With all the rubbish coming out of the far east, I would suggest that you check that your freeze plugs are in fact brass by filing an outer edge. A few years ago I replaced the plugs on my Kubota tractor and they didn't last a year. The plugs from the tractor dealer were pot metal with brass plating.replacing core plugs on an old engine what would you do to make sure they had a good seal . a Loctite b jb weld c other![]()
I've not heard that one before, but I like it.In the dim recesses of what passes for a brain, I recall if you really cleaned the block a new plug [which was slightly convex] used to be fitted by giving a drift held in the middle a belt with a hammer, they were a tight as a crab's rectum at 500 fathoms.
