I've just had a replacement for my Ryobi RCS2040 chainsaw as the motor had failed at less than a year old. Trouble is, I got it back with a full chain oil tank, puty it in the shed and didn't use it at all, went to move it aside the other day and it's ****** most of it onto the shed floor! Having taken the side cover off I can see the end of the feed hose from the lubricator trhough a hole in the chain bar and I can remember tehre being something in the bar on teh last one blocking my view. Looking on the 'net it seems the petrol ones have a felt washer or some sort of seal to stop the oil pi55ing out, can anyone confirm this please?

I cannot answer your question, but if you have still not tried the machine since the repair, I would do so ASAP in respect of the fact that you have already identified one possible fault. It is more difficult to argue your case after a period of time when the "other side" question why you did not notify them preveiosly. Hope you get it sorted.
I can't comment on the Ryobi chainsaw but on both my Husqvarna's the guide bar is fitted against a thin steel plate which has the hole for the oil feed to the bar in it. There are no seals between the two.
I don't know on the oil feed arrangement but it could be that it is passing through the pump under gravity. Have you checked how much oil is left in the tank?
Also It would be worth testing it to ensure the chain is getting lubricated. Put a piece of cardboard on the ground and run the chainsaw pointing the bar towards the cardboard. There should be a oil droplets deposited on the card. This is one of the checks we used to do before starting work to ensure that everything is being lubricated.

most of my saws (i have 6) will leak a bit of oil when sat. there is no seal between the guid bar and the block where the oil comes out just a flat face.

As has been said, most saws p*** a bit of oil when standing. Electric saws tend to use a thinner chain lube oil cos there's no engine heat to thin it in cold weather and their oil pumps are weaker and as a consequence can p more . Better that the chain gets too much than too little oil but if there's an adjusting screw for the oil feed try throttling it back a bit but do the "fling test" as already suggested afterwards.
All said, Ryobi are cheap and pretty way down the quality spectrum so don't expect too much.

Main saw is a Stihl, MS 290 no problem over the summer months when it's sitting idle, I'll get a few drips worth, barely noticable really. When I'm using it over the winter months, regularly you'll see oil below it, but I put that down to not cleaning it fully every time / draining back through the guide bar.. use too regularly to justify a proper strip down every time so it gets a good blast out with the compressor each time and a proper clean every time I change the chain...
the little alpina I have is for trimming etc, same deal no big quantity, just a small weep from time to time.
I would reckon there's something amiss with yours, shouldn't be seeing a big leak like that, but don't know the exact model, it might be normal.. probably best to run it, and see if it's still doing it, worst thing you can do to these things is leaving them idle for too long, just run them up from time to time.

My Stihl ms260 leaks loads too
I have a 50e special and it didnt leak, was a great little saw, but then the father in law borrowed it and it lost a chain and ever since its been peeing out when left.
I suspect it probably had something restricting flow that the flailing broken chain ragged off similar to the issue you are having.
As MckDavid says, even the nasty ones shouldnt really leave more than a spot to mark their territory. It could be a case of they all do that mister, because everyone has damaged the same things due to fragility or placement.

Well, been the tool dealers today and they took a look at a Ryobi petrol saw and it's the same as mine, gravity fed and an open end to the oil hose, so it is obviously ust mean to pee oil out when not in use unless you drain it out, odd, as I don't remember the old one doing it? Ah well, it's empty now and going on fleabay as soon as I get back from me hols
