My mum has a brick wall separating her garden from neighbour. It's her wall.
40 odd foot is about 4ft between gardens, then goes to about 7ft between the actual houses another 40 odd foot.

They have attached a 4ft trellis type screen along the length of the 4ft. They never said what they were doing or asked it it was ok, its drilled in the wall with some sort of bracketry their side.

She spotted them pushing around the 7ft length and asked them what they were up to, they are looking to attach some sort of covering to the wall and their garage as its a narrow passage way their side.

Given she owns the wall, should they be at least asking her if its ok, or stronger, would it need her permission?

if its her wall tell them not to fasten anything to it as it dosnt belong to them and its not the boundary wall as thats between both garages

if its the boundary wall, its shared so to a degree both neighbours can fasten to it to a degree as its both co owned

dont go down the argument its not theres as it will cost you loads

remember if they do work on the boundary wall and it comes down they are responsible for it same as if they decide to change or upgrade it on there behalf as its there cost

The understanding - which I have asked my feckless ass of a brother to confirm through land registry, is that it is her wall as confirmed 45 years ago by previous neighbour who had the detailed plans.

I looked at the plans she had and they could not confirm as they were not detailed - so that needs addressing but its pretty sure it is not theirs or shared. I will end up finding out myself no doubt.

She is in a row of 3, middle of 2 other detached properties.

There is already brick damage from the wind leveraging the 4ft wall

Even if it was their wall, you would have thought they would give a knock to a 92yr old and tell her what they were doing, w*nkers!

Think I will give them a knock instead

just explain that the boundary is inbetween the garages and that you request that they dont fasten anything onto your wall as its not the boundary wall

and access between the garages is needed for clean outs between the garages as your garage has been built on your side of the boundary wall therefore matenance of both propertys can be carried out when needed

fitting trelis between the garages would stop this action from taking place and therefore leaves and other debris can collect there

and that they are more than welcome to fit a post between the garages and put trellis onto there own garage

i gather you never had that git that decided they wanted to put up fencing so built it over the wall that is not the boundary but your own internal wall that you built infront of the boundary wall

but many dont think to include gutter space to collect the run off from there shed roofs

splashing it onto the boundary wall is in a way causing more errosion of the wall and can cause the excess water to spill onto the next doors property over the wall

owners dont have the right to air over the boundary and even planning can cause this issue as they dont include or refuse plans so that owners have it on there own land with there own access to maintane it

planning should enforce 1ft away from the boundary wall on any single tier build

It's not a border dispute as such, no one is falling out yet, the wall is getting damaged already from stuff being bolted to it, if they have plans to add more bolted on stuff and it comes down???
That's the argument I want to negate - it's not a stupid thing, it will cost a lot.

as its happened here

what i did was grab sledge hammer out of the shed smashed it up and launched it across there garden as they had caused criminal damage and was trying to pinch land

in your case id just rip the lot down as i see it they are causing crimnal damage by putting there fencing up on my property

however to save issues just tell them to remove it as the wall dosnt belong to them and your asking for them to remove it

for god sake record the convo and there reply

mine was all done on cameras cctv does come in real handy

More like 4ft closed lattice, my mistake in description.
Are you an expert in old 4ft wall tolerance to wind resistance of attached 4ft trellis or lattice? - Jog on

Does it look like there's any life in it? Mortar falling out of the brickwork? Does the Trellace enhance the appearance? Is it causing any harm or is it just pedantic splitting hairs nonsence? Live and let live I say. At least they're doing something and not having an overgrown monstrosity of a garden next door. Be thankful.

im the owner of the wall that donst give any idiot to fit anything to it weather trelis or not

its not a boundary wall

its my own wall built inside of the boundary

@Kram ? what makes you think you have the right to fit your trelis to my brickwall as it wont cause any damage to the wall or pull down the wall with something so light

when your not the owner of said wall

infact it would give me the right if i went eye for an eye that i had every right to rip off your trellis causing damage to it

you then couldnt get me done for criminal damage as you are not the owner of the wall you might be of the trelis but once you fitted it to my wall past the boundary it was gifted in the eyes of the law.

Out of common decency they should have asked, best to keep this sort of thing informal or it will escalate. I would be knocking on the door, not for anything other than to straighten out any misconceptions the neighbours may have and to find out what they intend to build. Bottom line here is your dear old mum needs to live next door to these people, as hard as it may seem and for the sake of your mother its best to try and keep it friendly.
