Why does it have to be cast iron or is it because that's the original material the part is made from?


Aluminium, Brass, Bronze or Bright Steel, it all really depends on how often you intend using the taper attachment and what's available at the time.

Im going inches as a bit of CI 1.75 mm wouldn’t be much use!
CI off cuts are hard to find , I buy exactly what I need due to price.
Perhaps a hydraulics repair shop may have a offcut from gland material.
Going by the fit required alloy, brass and bronze are pain because it rules out surface grinding,unless you want to scrape in steel is unacceptable to be running in a soft cast Iron guide

Pressbrake - yes, for a Holbrook C13! Sketched out what I think I need to make:


Not as elegant as the original (a casting I don't have...), but with the essential features (taper gib, oil port, thread for the link bolt).

Cast iron as it'll run against the steel setting bar and ought to be scraped in... Better watch some YouTube!

The 4" x 5" x 1.75" is bare minimum dimensions to get the shoe and gib out of with careful cutting / milling!

Andrew has offered (thanks!) 3.5" x 2" x less-than10" but I *think* the 4" dimension (fore-and-aft along the setting bar) IS required! I'll look see how big the original is (if in doubt, ask the Holbrook group on t'interwebby thing).

My alternative is to make something like the Monarch shoe with roller bearings carried on eccentrics, a bit more work though...

I think they changed the taper attachment a few times over the life of the Model C and different models, I've seen the trough but mine has a plain rectangular bar hinged in the middle, bolts each end of to lock it down and a threaded adjuster at the tailstock end - all original, would work if the shoe was there...
