I got the clamp repaired and sent back to @WvW yesterday.

You ruined the paint job!! Should have made a cold repair - wouldn’t chewing gum have been better?

Are the washers there to prevent him over-tightening It?

A good job well done, actually. I would likely have just made a new one, I think.

Certainly ruined the paint.
Mind you, it was a good guide to show when I had enough preheat in it.

The washers were to maintain the correct gap and to try and keep the clamp as near circular as I could.
They can come out, but I thought id keep them in as it makes it more robust during carriage (why not)
The clamp was faulty from new (the free end had some thread left in it) so I think it will work fine now.
When the washers are out it's as springy as a springy thing.

I suppose I could have made another one but I always like to fix things if I can and it would have taken "me" more time than fixing the original.
