I've got this on the side of my house, a cable is strung to houses either side and I want rid of it and the cables.

Is there any way to tell if it is still active? I chopped off the two coax cables at the bottom that went into my house.

There are other newer looking cables coming into the front of the property from underground which I suspect are a replacement.

Have you tried peeing on it? Other than that I’d use a meter or a plug tester/ probe.

Don't think a normal meter will show anything as it will be very high frequency signals on the lines.

Ask your neighbours if any still have old non-fibre Virgin Media.

That looks more like a British Relay junction box, discontinued a long time ago, maybe the 1970s.

The cover has "British Relay" printed on it. I've been disconnecting a wire a day over the last few days, last one tomorrow. Then I'll leave it a while to see if anyone complains. I've no idea how long the daisy chain is.

It was switched off in the 1970s, nobody will complain!

I think I read somewhere that Gloucester was the first area to get British Relay. The connection point was a white multi flat pin socket that used to get screwed to the windowcill at the point of entry.

Well it's now disconnected, off to Porto next week then when I'm back I'll let the neighbours know that I'm going to take it down along with the supporting steel cable looped over to their house. They can then decide if the want to chop out the section to the next house.

If the cable runs across the front of your house and is attached then presumably the perpetrator MUST have a way leave. If not just prune it like a bit of rampant ivy also there without permission.

We had it from Rediffusion, it was awful, it always stopped working at critical times but there was no alternative as we couldn’t get reception any other way. About 1975 a relay transmitter was built on the hill & the system was turned off. There are still odd bits of wire & poles around slowly decaying
