The digital ones run all the time, they just turn off the display. It's the same with digital verniers. I always take the batteries out after use. As for torque wrenches, I use a beam wrench. I doesn't go out of calibration so long as you don't exceed its capacity. Didn't Rolls Royce always use them?
They can be awkward sometimes in a confined space. Mine is over 50 years old and is as accurate as the mechanical ones I have plus you have that little bit of 'feel' rather than a click.
