I like how the grammar school students are assumed to go into one of the technical or "higher level" positions

I went to grammar school and they treated us like it was the 1950's

But equally, they looked to give those who mucked up their 11+ and went secondary modern, a opportunity to recover and get to the same destination in the end.

It wasnt a criticism

I was my choice to leave school at 16, however 99% of my school did A levels and then university

I'll have to dig out something similar I have from the 70's printed by the EITB (engineering industry training board)

I did my apprenticeship in an iron foundry and they took me on as an electrical technician which meant I did my day release at Birmingham Poly instead of the local college. The company could see that automation was the future and wanted people trained to work with the new technology, sadly, most of the group closed down due to cheaper imports just as I finished my time so I had to find a job elsewhere.

I'm training up a 19 year old, just done thé first week with him.

Hé did his first oil change on a marine engine this afternoon, all good.

I'm pleasantly suprised.

Then we removed a marine gearbox, and thé fun began.

I said changing a damper normally takes an hour, but can take four.

In 23 minutes we had thé gearbox out, then it all went pear shaped.

Thé damper is held in by 'btr's those bolts you remove with an Allen Key.

6 out of 8 came unscrewed as you'd expect, two rounded off.

Fetched thé unwin sockets no access.

Fun continues tomorrow, i'll get photos.

Try that at private school .....

Thats what you pay the fees for….if a kids friends only see doctors, dentists, accountants, engineers or successful business owners in the houses they visit, thats what theyll think is the norm, and A levels gets you there. Its not only about the education.

After drilling out the rivets on the damper, got a bit more space, and thank the god of Unwin sockets the Allen bolts came out easily.

This, on the left, is what a damper plate should look like.

I slung it all back together.

And bless him, he did the same, without problems.

Yes, he did confuse the diesel filter with the oil filter, nevermind.

But he's a good lad, I'm happy we found him.

He's done outboards, but never touched inboards.

So far so good, I'm suprised, good sensible head on him, asks the right questions.

He's not technically an apprentice, he's a boat technician, but we all have to start somewhere.

So I'm his colleague / teacher.

I quite enjoy it.

It's different.
