Old oil cans..leaky?

Got this old oil can and several like it...do they all leak ? This seems to wick oil up somehow and makes a mess

I have one similar design, a cheapo bought new from ebay after I was sick of the other two leaking, I only fill it just over half way and so far so good, no messy oil rings everywhere or hands covered in oil every time I want to use it

Perhaps by being half full gravity wins over wicking and the oil drops back before it reaches an exit route.

Seems to be the norm for them. I always stand mine somewhere that oil won't bother.

All my oilcans stand in an old shallow baking tray.

I stand mine on the oilstone I use for sharpening, at least it's not wasted.

Mine live on the tables of my drills, helps stop them rusting.

I have a few of them. Only leak if over filled. Or if Norbert knocks them over.

My oil cans all live in a 14l plastic box with a oil soakage mat in the bottom.

You can hang those little ones off the chip/suds tray on a lathe or mill, very handy.

If you don't like it then sell it, they are strong sellers on eBay and the like. There should be a dom on the bottom if it's a Wesco. It's not the design of the can though unfortunately, it's a problem with all of them.

On mine I have an added problem of thousands of midgies and ants who come to feed on the oil and die making a black sludge of dead insects!

I've started using these for filling oil cups, don't leak, much quicker, no more pumping.

That tops our leaks.

Never bothers me as such, the leaking. They're just such nices cans to have knocking about. Besides, the leaking stops them rusting.

I use the same thing for lathe coolant - much better/I mean cheaper than a pump.

The only cans I've ever known not to be leaky are Reilang alloy ones.

Just make sure you're sitting down when you ask the price though
