My brother in law has a good number plate on a 1960s Humber Hawk estate, but the car would need a lot of work so the plate is dead,

Interesting. I run a 1960 Hawk saloon as my daily (with Rover V8). Love the estates.

Brother in laws Hawk Estate is bodily in really good nick, I remember him stripping the gearbox off it it get to the clutch,then started to strip paint back to bare metal, And thats as far it it got, Been dry stored in his garage for years.

I had 33** on a Volvo 1800S that was too far gone to restore (used it as a parts donor for my earlier P1800). Reg was worth a small fortune but no way could I legitimately get it transferred. It was "suggested" I get an MOT on the P1800 after swopping plates but was warned such a valuable number resurfacing after being off the road would stand a high chance of the car requiring inspection and whilst superficially the P1800 & 1800S might look similar there were many differences that anyone could see.

I feel its just not worth the risk, is the car really that bad? It only needs an MOT not to be a show winner

A chap at work has been mot'ing and insuring a logbook for a couple years as he wants to transfer the plate

Why would you bother? As soon as you have the mot you can put the number on retention and the phantom car goes to a phantom scrapper and gets shipped to the phantom razor blade mill in china.
