My brother in law has a good number plate on a 1960s Humber Hawk estate, but the car would need a lot of work so the plate is dead,

my father tried this when he found the paperwork for my grandfathers old anglia, it had a plate on it with my fathers initials out of coincidence but he was told that he would need to have the car in order to re-register the car with a new plate so he could transfer the original plate to his car, or something along those lines

As I understand it to transfer a plate the original vehicle needs an MOT, it seems a little unfair as the DVLA will sell you a personal plate without a "donor" vehicle.

Hi, I think the legality is you don't own the number the DVLA do, they then issue it to the vehicle. If the vehicle is scrapped or ceases to exist it should then be returned to DVLA. They, I think, only sell non issued numbers.

It used to be taxed within the last six months so in theory the mot can be 18 months old and they used to inspect random cars, I've had a couple checked.Not sure if any of this has changed now though as I haven't done a transfer in years.

Yes, since the demise of the LVLO, they I understand, contract it out to private companies and they come round and inspect.

A chap at work has been mot'ing and insuring a logbook for a couple years as he wants to transfer the plate

Cars that suddenly appear out of the woodwork like that will more than likely have to be inspected and the signatories for the relevant car club will have to sign to say that it is what it purports to be.
