Old Hotmail email account full, can't empty it.

Help please folks.

Started my first email account 31 (?) years ago, and finally a couple of days ago, thought it was weird I'd stopped getting emails to it. It's our principal email account, school, work, appliances, just about everything.

Turns out it's full, 165% full, and has stopped working, which is a bummer.

Googled it, logged on to a desktop computer, hit ctrl a, deleted at least 10,000 emails, tonight, they're all back.

Any ideas please folks.

Does it move them into a "trash" folder? then you have to permanently delete them from there.

Have a legacy account not hotmail but if I only delete they return, there is a box that says Trash it has moved them all to I have to delete from there as well.
This is on the server not my computer once they are gone from server you can delete from computer without them comming back
Can you log into the Hotmail server for your acc it would be the one you use if not at home

Does this only happen with POP servers, or is there a box in hotmail set up to tick that takes them off the HM server as well as yours

Have you also deleted mails from Deleted items folder?

Empty the Deleted Items folder – Empty the Deleted Items folder frequently to make sure you aren’t keeping messages you don’t need.

Empty the Junk Email folder – Periodically empty the Junk Email folder to save your inbox space for messages you actually want.

Store attachments outside your mailbox – As attachments accumulate over time, they can take up a lot of space. For attachments you want to keep, consider saving them to a team site, to OneDrive, or to folders on your computer.

You can try to use the Mailbox cleanup tool, if, you are using the outlook desktop client
In Outlook, choose File> Cleanup Tools > Mailbox Cleanup.

Also, in below article there is a great way to search for mails above a specified size, which you can move or delete them to free up some space.

The user receives a "mailbox is full" warning message for a mailbox that hasn't reached the storage limit.

Symptom 2​

When the user deletes email messages, the following warning message is displayed:

The operation could not be completed.

Symptom 3​

The user can't change or accept a calendar invitation.

Cause​

This issue occurs if the mailbox size exceeds the mailbox quota. The mailbox size that the user sees isn't the actual size because it doesn't include the Recoverable Items folder. This folder isn't visible to users.

Resolution​

Here's how to resolve this issue:

1. Verify the storage quotas of the user's mailbox by running the following cmdlet:
   PowerShell

Get-Mailbox user@contoso.com | fl ProhibitSendReceiveQuota,RecoverableItemsQuota

Then, verify the status of the mailbox quota by running this cmdlet:

1. Get-MailboxStatistics user@contoso.com | fl StorageLimitStatus,TotalItemSize,TotalDeletedItemSize
   
   • If the StorageLimitStatus value isn't blank, this means that the mailbox size exceeds the quota. The user will encounter the issue that's mentioned in the "Symptoms" section.
   • The TotalItemSize value refers to the portion of the mailbox that's visible to the user. The TotalDeletedItemSize value refers to the size of the Recoverable Items folder that isn't visible to the user.
2. If the TotalItemSize value exceeds the ProhibitSendReceiveQuota value, or if the TotalDeletedItemSize value exceeds the RecoverableItemsQuota value:
   • For Symptoms 1 and 3, you can either ask the affected user to delete items from the mailbox, or you can follow the next steps.
   • For Symptom 2, follow the next steps.

Here are the steps to fix this issue:

1. Verify that an archive is enabled for the affected user's mailbox by running the following cmdlet:
   PowerShell

Get-Mailbox user@contoso.com | fl ArchiveStat*

If the ArchiveStatus value is Archive, and if the ArchiveState value is Local, an archive is enabled in the cloud service. In this case, go to step 3.

If no archive is enabled, check whether the user is on hold by running the following cmdlet:

PowerShell

• Get-Mailbox user@contoso.com | fl *HoldEnabled
  
  If at least one of the returned values is True, this means that the user is on hold. If you don't want to enable an archive for that user, you must remove messages from the Recoverable Items folder. To learn more about the Recoverable Items folder, the storage quota, and how the folder interacts with In-Place Hold and Litigation Hold, see Recoverable Items folder in Exchange Online.
• Enable an archive, and set up a retention or deletion policy to automatically process email messages. To learn more, see Set up an archive and deletion policy for mailboxes in your organization.
• Verify which retention policy is applied to the affected user by running the following cmdlet:
  PowerShell
• Get-Mailbox user@contoso.com | fl RetentionPolicy
  
  Be aware that such policies automatically archive or delete items from the mailbox after some time.
• If a retention policy was recently modified or applied to the affected user, run mailbox processing manually by using the following cmdlet:
  PowerShell

1. Start-ManagedFolderAssistant user@contoso.com
   
   This cmdlet starts the mailbox processing tasks that run retention policies and clear messages as configured. Wait at least one hour, and then check the mailbox again.

Yes, I too found the Parmi response, which I followed, but doesn't seem to work.

I've found other solutions downloading software, to wipe stuff, but, I don't know if I can be bothered.

Would have thought there was a simple solution.

I never received any notifications, just stopped receiving emails, but I'm almost 100% Android devices.

its better done by pc

delete by page dont try to multi page delete as it dosnt work

first page delete all that page it will refresh and may fill back up again and you have to keep doing it

but it will reduce once you get past the spam mail

it just takes time to do it

ive already done it well over 3,000 pms

it took me a while doing it that way even been done by pc mobile will be worse to do it

only untick the ones you want to save and send them into another folder as i did the same when i was sorting out then

I've logged into Hotmail on a PC which is now Outlook? Just for the Ctrl A function, it says it's doing its thing, but doesn't. On Android it's file by file, and I think I've 30,000 emails I'm willing to delete.

Yep, tried that too, deleting 30 or 40 at a time.

But it's boring, when you've thousands to delete.

If you want to delete everything, in your Inbox, click the check box to the left of the first message, hold Shift and click the check box to the left of the last message. In the Reading Pane you should see a link that says "Select everything in your Inbox". Click that and you'll select all messages, even the ones on the other pages.
