Health and safety was an issue, and was controlled, the workers were properly trained and were familiar with their machines & tasks. The problem is that now we are expected to be able to do every job, with tools that are only just up to the task. As a result, failiures happen and people are injured (or worse), so we have to have more & more elaborate safety controls in place.

The problem is this:- "we can make it cheaper"

Stupid people have always been able to injure themselves & others, it's just that now we have to employ them!!

Not very practical on machines of that size, you would need a block and tackle to lift the guards. In the case of glass, even of the safety variety, I think I would rather take my chances without!

My Lathe, circa 1960 had no guards, or provision to fit any. I made some from Lexan, and to be honest they are a pain in the bottom, but I like my eyes, and I'm not as skilled as the fellas wi' flat 'ats.

I have a Myford ML7, it is one of the first of the production line, it left the fitting room in 1947, which makes it 34 years older than me.
There are guards for the belt and gears, but nothing over the chuck.
Common sense, and concentration mean my fingers have never even had a near miss.

I had a Chinese Micro Lathe that had an interlocked chuck guard. I never fitted it, but the interlock still broke, needing a new switch Then the PCB burned out, hence the Myford

I think, that due to the size of those pieces, the actual speed will be quite slow, but it's just a huge lump of metal, so the inertia would be quite high. About the only guards that would be worthwhile are handrails to stop you falling into the actual machine.

I don't think a lump of swarf from one of those would get caught in your eye, probably remove your head.
