Old electric motor woes.

Got this vintage motor on a 1940's pillar drill, the insulation on the windings is crusty and it has no bearings so I can't test run it, I have other motors but the pulleys will have to be re bored and keyed to fit, is it worth having this old motor rewound or shall I bin it and cut my losses?

Shame to waste a nice vintage motor.

I would test Mega the windings first, it may be fine?, usually its cheaper to replace rather than rewind, our local winder hasn't rewound a motor for ages unlesss its a rare one thats not easy to replace

The cost of the bearings is not much.
May be worth investing in a set, if you have the correct details.

Motor re-winds are not that cheep for a single unit, due to the lack of demand.

MM do a good range of replacements motors and some pullies.

I assume that the insulation that you're referring to is on the winding tails? See below.

If the windings megger out OK just replace the tails.

you can get an aluminum bodied 1, 2 or 3 kW motor for less than 150 euros here, personally, it's not worth the bother dicking about with an older one these days.. that is, if you want a functional machine, if it's a restoration, then up to you. basically tool or ornament....

I've got a pile of salvaged motors, there will still be cost involved in getting the pulley off the drill fitted to the new motor shaft, is rather put that cost into restoring this nice old motor but I'm guessing a rewind won't be cheap.

I will get it insulation tested and if it fails bin it.

You can pick up a used brook crompton equivalent for £40 ish. Whats the shaft dia? / what pillar drill is it?
