Old DeWalt saw bench,

A question for the knowledgable woodworking chaps, A friend came with a problem to day, He has an old DeWalt saw bench (cast iron table etc) The left hand nut holding the blade had stripped, Must have been a replacement because it was brass, Working blind in his cluttered garage, I measured the o/d of the shaft thread at .778",So a few thou under 20mm and the stripped nut appeared to be 1.5mm pitch, So does sound normal for a DeWalt machine to be 20mm thread?

Not a direct answer, but I have a Shopmate radial arm saw. The gear on the motor shaft is a bit worn, it means a new armature as it is a brushed motor and the gear is cut into the shaft
So, I got on the web and very quickly came up with a site in the US that carries spares. Phoned the number and the guy told me that there was zero chance of a new part for a 230volt machine. Shopmate have been out of business for quite a while. Thing still goes, but is getting a bit noisy.

In your case; might it be an idea to find a similar place and give them the model number? If it is an old DeWalt, I would have expected an inch thread?

I was totally expecting a non metric thread too, I personally have not seen any identifying plates etc, this machine is virtually buried under all sorts of other things, I was told that his grandson and found an image on the net, But I am awaiting info from the grandson, 20MM seems like the only likely size, And my thread gauges on the damaged nut came out at 1.5mm or 16TPI,

I have had various dewalt chop saws and bench saws, Most have beem metric but i have come across a few that were imperial mainly the dewalt/elu range, If you can get the model number you might find a parts list, All my older dewlat stuff has come with an exploded view of the unit with parts listed.

I think my dw125 has a brass nut.

I seem to recall the dia on that is 9 16ths, or 14.something mm.

I would be surprised if it were metric.

PS I wonder if it stripped when someone tried to remove the blade, not realising the thread was reversed...

The bits of the saw i could see today looked like one of the old fashioned heavy lumps that you used to see on building sites, hope the grandson will contact me soon, Appearently he photographed the plate on his phone,

may be 3/4x 16 tpi unf thread

3/4" UNF would measure out at a a shade under 0.750" this shaft is 0.28" bigger Dia than that,

get somebody to screwcut a new nut if all else fails.......be nice if u can get at the saw properly tho.......

Last time I had to make a LH nut for a bench grinder I took a 1.5mm pitch tap and ground all of the teeth except one row, then sharpened the trailing side of the remaining teeth and used it as a threading tool in my lathe set for cutting LH threads. I had to grind all of the helix off from behind the cutting edge (because it was the reverse of what I needed) which made it a one-shot tool but after a few spring passes it produced a very nice brass LH nut.

I have found some 20mm left hand nuts 1.5mm pitch on Ebay, He is going to order a couple, I thing they should fit OK, Will report back when I know more info,
