Matt don;t be tempted by the "disposable" type bottles and there regulator. Cost of gas is stupid money for the amount of welding time. If you got the reg for one of them then it wont work/fit on a big bottle.
Hi everyone, dont worry i havnt blown myself up! I was just enquiring to see if that bottle could be of use, i have just picked up a hobby weld 5 from the local supplier. Todays questions are, will the argon mix regulator from weldequip, linked earlier in the thread, be fine with this? Also I have got a new liner, it comes with a brass fitting on one end whereas the old one doesnt, i assume i can just cut this off to match the old one?
Thank you
I think you will find the brass fitting will screw into the thread on the gas valve, from memory there is a small push fit fitting screwed into the valve to take the poly tube. Take this out & screw the new one in.
If you have bought a "standard" euro torch liner then it could be the brass fitting is as per item "C" to the left of 19 (shows as same colour as liner but I have had them with brass fitting) which is not needed for the clarke. http://www.weldequip.com/products/eurotorch-sb250-parts-large.jpg
I put a wire euro liner into my non euro ancient torch, it was a fiddle, I cut the brass bit off and had to drill out the old liner clamp collet to fit the bigger liner. It feeds properly now but next time round I'm going to bite the bullet and convert to euro.
I've had a few of the these machines before, there isnt much to go wrong on them and they can give you good results. i would take the covers off, make sure the wiring hasnt come crusty etc, quick clean, new metal liner, tip and shroud, a decent earth clamp. i would recommend to strip down the wire feed gearbox, have had one with some very old thick grease which caused issues, clean out and aplly new grease and should be good to go
Hi again everyone, just an update this time and maybe 1 question. I have fitted the new liner, shroud, tip and wire. New regulator arrived today (thanks weldequip) so I put that on the gas bottle. Found an old saw and had a little test, it seems to work so thank you to everyone for your help. My question is this, on the first picture I posted, where the wire spool goes there is a black spacer and lockring, should this spacer clamp against the spool when the lockring is tightened or is it just to keep the spool from coming off the offset locating pin? I will upload a pic in a minute, thanks again
