Does my 30 year old Porsche 924 Turbo count?
Just come back from a week in France in it, 1000 miles never missed a beat, done it twice now. The previous 924 non turbo did longer trips 3 or 4 times too.
Never had a major problem, the odd minor niggle (SWMBO kicking wires out from the fuesbox under the dash being one of them!) and the oil pressure gauge wiring coming adrift making the oil pressure drop suddently...!
But they are cheap (Non turbos are sub £600 with T&T) comfortable and fast enough 125 bhp N/A or 170-177 bhp turbo (turbo is significantly faster but cost more and do occasionally blow up) Most of the bits are cheap from VW or Porsche or failing that second hand form e-bay and the specialist breakers. Even the turbo did 38 mpg too on the long runs.
Best of all the bodywork is Galvanized (Up to the door tops on 77-79 then all from 80 on) so they very very rarely suffer from terminal rot.

AGREED! these are brilliant almost forgotten cars, sadly overshadowed by the 911 series and Boxsters. Great driving position and fun to drive as well, you can DIY these as well, practical with a large (if flat) boot space with the rear seats folded. And the related 944 series of cars is even better. I have a 3.0L 944S2 also in Guards Red paint (off the road at the moment). Even the bigger engined 944s like mine get 30+ MPG on a run- at 90mph if you overtake everything on the motorway. And if you drive with restraint at 70mph or slower, can get 35 to 36mpg on a run.
The 944's are starting to rust now- but just on the sills and front wing bottoms. A 25 year old 944 or 924 will have survived far better than an 80s Japanese coupe. Oh, and with proper servicing, the engines give galactic milages before a rebuild. There was a 944 turbo in one of the magazines that had done 360,000 miles on its original engine, gearbox, turbo and even exhaust!
I suspect my 944S2 has been clocked by a previous dealer, but showing at least 160,000+ miles the engine is still sweet and burns no oil at all.
