Batteries are worth a bit as all the materials can be easily recycled.
As there is a world shortage of lead, the scrap value has increased.

Acid proof bucket, with a lid, gloves, eye protection and fresh air.

Insure the files are dry and clean, you don't want a unexpected reaction.

When finished, decant back in batteries and weigh in.

Why not just buy new clean acid for sharpening the files? No dissolved lead and you don't need to crack open a sealed battery which can easily go wrong.

Thought there was a ban on selling battery acid. Obviously not....

Last motorbike battery I bought came pre filled.

Well i was gonna say the ease of use and safety/environmental aspect, but it's your call.

Lots now are sealed with either no removeable bungs or serrated bungs to prevent opening.

Had to buy a new battery for the Freelander in Belgium last month, the dealer where I bought the new battery gave me 13 euros credit for the old battery.

I do find it strange that people will take things like batteries to the tip when you could get a few quid. If you do drain them you need to fill them with water as the price they pay you is based them having the liquid in them so you are only doing yourself out of money. I always top them up if they are a bit low before I weigh them in.

We took a few in a while back and some were only small sealed types used in things like boost pack and we had £35. For us it's a no brainer, we would have drive further to get to the tip than the scrappy. We don't make special trip and we make sure we are going near by.

One phone call will tell you what they are paying per kg. Getting paid real money for rubbish is a good feeling.

I have helped clear the knackered battery mountain in the boat yard, 1st load just over the ton, the 2nd lot just under, put together exactly 2 tons £1150 in total for the Boat Yard. Obviously most of these are big bu**ers. If you can phone around scrappies in the same area can offer different prices.

Still has the cap seal intact. Given the cap design it is fairly 'modern'.

That has a reference to not being suitable for Rover 825/827 Models (there's a surprise!) so that puts it around the late 80's.

I tried to Freecycle both of these some time ago.

Given this discussion, I think I'll keep the Sulphuric Acid to clean aluminium from my files then.

Given this discussion, I think I'll keep the Sulphuric Acid to clean aluminium from my files then.

Also useful for removing galvanized zinc coating off steel for welding. I have some spirits of salt, which is hydrocholic acid, for that.

Does give off horrible noxious fumes though.
