Hello all,

My brother gave me this older SIP mig welder. The plug on the end of the electrical cord is missing and he said his son was messing around one day and was sticking the bare wires into a 110 socket in the garage. Can this cause damage? I am asking because I will need to run 220V out to my garage and I do not want to buy the materials and install it in the garage if the welder is damaged. Thanks for any help or feedback...

Also, any idea where I can download a manual for it? Here is a photo of the front.

if it is a 220V welder, then 110V wont hurt it, as it is lower. even if the wires were connected backwards it should be fine.

im suprised the kid didnt get a bit of a buzz though.

easiest way to find out is put a 220V plug on it, and plug it ina nd try it

Thanks brokenbiker! He did get a little bite from doing it, and the way my brother found out he was messing with it was a little black suet around the receptical and a blown breaker... Guess I will go buy the materials to install the 220V and try her out... Thanks again!

if the breaker blew then its a sign that the welder tried taking its required power, and couldnt, so it didnt receive enough power to do damage

I don't agree with the 'put a plug on and try it' method, consult a qualified person and make sure what you intend to do is safe and the machine is designed to run off the voltage you intend to use

obviously only try it at 220V if that is what it is meant for, but as long as you have a safe supply, and the relevant fuse in the plug, or in the welder, the worse you should do is blow a fuse or trip a breaker

is there no one near you with 220 volts just to try it on before you install 220AC just to try it
just use a circuit breaker type switch in a short lead just to try so you don't blow who ever's AC out if it shorts out

Thank guys! I am going to take it to a friends shop and plug it in next weekend. It is a 220V outlet with a 50 amp breaker. I was just concerned that if the two positive wires were plunged in at the same time it might affect the circuit board... Thanks again!

In the 110V receptacle that is...

If it works, you can install a 30A dryer outlet. It should not need more than 20A. There should be a table on the back with power requirements.

I'd prefer a twist-lock plug and outlet. I'd use those on my welders but I need 50A and hard to find any twist-locks over 30A.

Should be a decent welder.

looks like a spot timer.

When set to above zero, pull trigger and the welder runs for a fixed time ans shuts off until trigger is released and pulled again.
