oil seperator

Do any of you guys know if you can clean an oil seperator filter? I have a large hpc 51 compressor which is begining to be a cow to start and the oil seperator light comes on but i would rather clean the filter if possible than fork out near £500 quid for a replacement!

cant comment on what filter u have but i had a diesel screw compressor and there was a bank of 6 fibreglass filters in a tank and were sludged up and letting oil pass in to the airline . i took them out and washed them in petrol and re fitted them and it was fine. the compressed air stunk of petrol for a while mind. it makes u gasp a bit with an air fed helmet

Not exactly the safest stuff to use, but it does the job well. I tend to use citrus based solvents for cleaning gunge from most things, these days. The types of stuff they class/brand as label remover, brake pad cleaner etc. Has a lot nicer smell to boot.

Cheers. I'm just working through a stock of the stuff I've picked up over the years for free, at the moment, so that will make the time when I have to actually buy some less painful.

my filters were 9 inch in diameter and about 3 inch thick and there was 6 of them the sluge wasnt just on the edges it was right through . thats why i used petrol to soak right through then squeezed them out a fair few times
