Oil seal how to fix poss repair with out a full dismantle

I usually punch something small and pointed through the seal and extract that way rather than drill. Avoid damaging the casing

so pointed and then screw or try pulling out with pointed bit

Make sure the lips of the seal are lubricated when you fit it, some come with grease on them already so you may not need it. If it’s not lubricated it can tear the lips, or burn the sharp edges off with friction, then it won’t seal properly.

i added a bit of oil when fitting but did not help as shown just kicking myself for not cheaking the seal properly when putting the crank in

Ok a follow on from my son's bike gone bang thread we fixed it put all the bits back in the bike the bike runs well untill my son said dad is that oil

And after trying to find what was wrong as most of the oil was from near the clutch area removed the front cog to see this stupid mistake View attachment 170321 see the right hand side of the oil seal seams to be turned over can this be pushed back or changed with out a full dismantle ? (ADD HERE LOTS OF 4 LETTER WORDS NOT ALOWED ON THE FOURM )

Mr Wolf it looks like you have snagged the lip seal when you installed it. That ramp on the crank is quite brutal so I would suggest making a sleeve/wrap to help the lip over the ramp before reinstalling a new one, I usually cut up a coke can or a washing up liquid bottle with a pair of scissors and wrap with that, lube seal and install , gently pull out when seal is installed.

I’ve used a piece of paper to install seals on my Norton coat oil on the paper wrap it around the shaft and slide the seal down. I used this method after 2 tries on the timing shaft it works great!

The spring was loose but on the shaft

Thanks for all the help the seal is in and was easy (think this was more to do with the tool provided by @carbon )

A oil and a few taps it's was in and back together

For others who have seal problems a bit like that of Angellonewolf .

I drilled / bored the end of piece of 1/4 " mild steel rod to take a 1/8 drill bit and brazed the drill in the end of the rod . Hey Presto ! .....a nice long drill to get me past the length of the shaft poking out . I slipped three thin but long very high tensile self tappers in and using a motorcycle tyre lever that was spoon shaped cut a " V" in one end , got a noggin of alu left over from a job on the lathe and used it as a fulcrum to pivot the lever on & took the seal out.
If the seal is one of the fully enclosed rubber ones popping the seal carrier is not problematic . , magnetising the drill might help keep any swarf out a non enclosed seal still in the seat but if you're very careful as soon as the speed of the drill changes stop and knock the self tapper through the remaining thin skin. as you turn the screwdriver or mini socket on a long T bar it only needs one turn to be good in most cases

Rather than using a thin metal can that might cut the seal I've often used a vending machine plastic cup . cut the bottom & top off , roll it round the shaft lip off draw a line along the overlap , cut off the waste , slather the outside of the cup in a bit of permissible grease slip it inside the seal and slide the seal over the well lubricated shaft .

I wrap a layer of insulating tape over the shaft ridges and splines, drop of oil on it and the seals slide along easily without damaging the lip.
