oil seal alternative help

i have an oil seal on a gearbox selector shaft , so only rotates by hand doesnt spin at speed , ive fitted a new seal but it still drips slightly , i wondered if theres any ideas on finding something with 2 sealing lips on it or something that might seal a bit better due to the wear on the shaft

Can you fit the seal the other way round so the lip sits on a different part of the shaft.

Are the bearings / bushes for the shaft holding it steady ? If there is play it will cause the seal to leak

could look at fitting it other way round ....tbh theres marks on the shaft from wear but i wont be taking the box apart

its just if i can purchase a stronger /better seal then its worth a try , otherwise it can leak

R21 is single lip seal, and R23 is double lip seal - or rather one primary seal and one dust seal.

No difference in spec between rotary and stationary, but as @the snooper mentioned, if the selector shaft bushes are worn, the shaft will move further than the lips of the seal are compressed, allowing a leak path.

If there are any scores on the shaft then those should be smoothed out to avoid either gapping the seal from the shaft, or ripping the seal lip to pieces.

seems its already a double lip with spring ...all i could try is a pukka brand name vs ebay special

See if there's a Speedi-sleeve the right size.

Or something like jb-weld if you are looking for a quick and cheap fix.

theres nothing to jb weld mate

i just wanted to know if theres a better than average high quality seal with extra lip /springs /whatever that might do a better job than the one i fitted

Take the spring off and find the join, untwist the spring to undo the join. One end is straight the other is tapered, cut a coil or two off the straight end and retwist the spring to join it.

It will put slightly more pressure on the seal and sometimes it'll be enough to stop a drip.

Seals intended for rotary applications differ from those used as fork seals say. Cant see if would make much difference on that type of application though, and leak is more likely result of shaft damage, or mechanical wear.

Is it possible to fit a 8mm or 10mm thick seal into the housing to get you into a fresh part of the shaft? Sometimes you can sometimes you can't depending on the setup

i can only see 5mm deep as an alternative , will look into if theres room for 2x 5mm

Since it's not rotating I've had another idea, how about using a piece of heat shrink tubing onto the shaft to increase it's diameter slightly ? preferably use the stuff that is glue lined as it will stick to the shaft once you heat it up to shrink it into place.
