Oil help

Because its me who ends up helping and financing most of them, and I do spend quite a bit of time on here!
He is a member but just usually posts as me
He is the only 20 year old I know who has a 1930's bike well most of one, he also has Bob the Land rover who is older than me, so plenty of interesting stuff not going on, this is an ideal Land Rover times as we are both off but I can only point as my hands still getting better, problem is Bob is in Storage so we can't visit

That’s all good and I’m conversant with the bank of mum and dad, I pester them all the time and I’m 47

Wouldn’t do him any harm to find his own way around the various problems, before he taps into your bank

His bike leaks, ( I have the same bike but a couple of years older) mine doesn't leak but I buy the oil!
I think I will have to fix the leak

Bit of rtv sealant works wonders

Think its the gear lever shaft, should get him to pull the seal and order one whilst we are off

I would not put car oil in motorcycles out of choice

They dont like working great for the gearbox bearings etc.
Would much rather use motorcycle oil.
Especially when opie oils or *a decent company* can do bike specific oil for not alot of money.

Googlemainia mate and put out by oil company's to justify bike oils being almost twice the price...i have had many super bikes and still do and use good quality fully and semi car oils in my bikes with zero clutch slippage or ill effects...but its the internet and everyone will have there own opinion so lets just carry on discussing..but please lets discuss based on experiences and not opening another page for a little Google read before posting

Each to there own then.
I know my motorcycles run 10w40 and always been recommended not to run car oils.

Cheap semi-synth doesn't have the fancy stuff in. I used to use Halfords semi 10w40 in my GPZ daily nail but used Wilko semi 10w40 last time with no problems.

I've used 10w40 car oil in mine for the last 20 years and never had a clutch go or slip. Valvoline or whatever the shop is selling at the time they usually go for the mid range but they are cheaper than bike specific oil.

is this google or bike oil company thoughts or do you have experience of your bike gearbox not liking car oils...mine are fine and always have been. i currently own 2 bikes atm with shaft drive and no proplem with the big bevel gears either on the shaft output side..I also dont know of any warranty problems using none bike oils but on this and all the above i stand to be corrected with the right evidence of course

Racers, trackdayers, mot trade, owner of motorcycle tuners and race support.

If there was no need to have motorcycle specific oil why would they make it?

One of my close friends owned a motorcycle shop in exeter for best part of 20years, now works for hel performance doing ohlins and k tech suspension but used to race really competitively against the likes of phil bevan and similar. Held the lap record at pembrey for 10years or so.

All of the above with over 40 years riding bikes and getting oily here...4 years working in a Harley Dealership in California...Very close friend been a motorcycle Mechanic since we were kids and classic TT racer (holds a record too).. Myself currently refurbishing and re-building Turbochargers (before this crisis hit)...Roofing is taken care of by my other personality and just pays the bills....Anyway we all have seen soooo many arguments about oil in many car and bike forums over the years and for this very reason and to save my sanity i am out!!
