just thought i would share what i have been thinking of building, i plan to use use a 47 kg propane for the main tank and do the rest to this guys plan
i have a large barn to heat and think this should do the trick.

should be able to build it for about £30, probably going to get a slapped wrist about the environment but hey.....

I thought of doing similar, but you need a licence to operate a waste oil burner in the UK, and I think it has to be of an approved type.

Those burners look v good- and simple!
I think rtb's correct about the license etc. I found my local garage/mechanics lobbing their oil burners in their skip a couple of weeks ago, fed up at losing their free heat cos they're almost banned. Lots of nasty heavy metals in old engine oil, i'm told.
Just don't tell anybody, and make sure it burns good and hot! Or convert it to use fat from the chippy.

Yep, won't take much making, got to be worth it.

Lots more goodies on Journeytoforever. I first came across it a few years ago looking for info on burning veg oil in the truck. Did a bit of converting, which worked, but as time has gone on JTF has ended up recommending proper conversion kits and special injectors, rather than diy conversions, so I gave up the veg oil (it a bit diesel knocky anyway)

The heat exchanger for the fuel means the truck doesn't fail the emissions tests anymore though! Burns clean as a whistle. (I disconnect it in the summer cos it makes the fuel too thin)

DONT use old oil, it really is terrible stuff. Make a good wood stove/coal stove/ vegi oil stove, they are far cleaner. Think about the next generation those cancerous matiriels will end up in the food chain.


Other then that, looks like a good project.

Coal's nearly as bad as old oil, if not as bad, and you're not allowed to burn painted wood either.

Used Engine oil is carcinogenic (ie it causes cancer). not too bad if you're just draining oil out your car, if you burn it, you'll be breathing it.

I don't know if burning it kills the carcinogens

Just make a wood burner and either cut down some trees for fuel or go round an industrial estate loading your van/trailer up with unwanted pallets

Yes they do give out a lot of heat my unit is about 18,000 sqft
And it can make a noticeable change it temperature in about 20 minutes of it being lit.
They cost nothing to run as my fan is run of a heavy duty battery which is only on charge over night
They can even be modified to run a hot water system.

cons
Getting it to run with pumping out thick black smoke
The constant adjustment you need to keep doing to them when they are running i.e.
As the oil runs low so the pressure drops off in the oil line so u then need to open the valve a little more
The hotter it gets the thinner the oil again adjustment of the flow valve
Having to unclog the oil drip pipe

Mine finally works with out too much bother now and all I get left with now is a very fine white ash about half a pint after 5-6 hours running.( uses about a gallon of oil or so ) There is no smoke only on start up which quickly clears and all you can see is a heat haze above the flue

I to used 1 of my old 47kg propane tanks and have had the whole thing glowing cherry red on a few occasions and remember these throw a lot of heat out in all directions. When on full chat the heat from mine can be felt on your legs from a good 7-8 ft away so much that u will have to move. You will need some stainless flue pipe and not the flexi stuff as mine can glow red for the first 12-18” depending on how high the heater is running.

Guessing at how much mine cost to build about £50-60 the cost of a 47kg propane bottle is £42 to exchange and I have only used 1 since I built the heater and that’s only for drying painted items The oil i use is free(wmo) veggie oil is ok but it has a higher flash point

Off peak electricity is half price (assuming you have a white meter &c), but you only get half the power out of a battery that you put into it so you don't really gain.

still cheaper than paying £42 quid for a bottle of propane and the space heater also uses electricity
not sure where the battery came from got it of my scrap man was on the back of his truck might be a old forklift battery

the guy on the site i posted, has done a lot of mods to his and posted all his findings, even how to set the drip properly so there isn't a constant need to adjust it, by use of a better valve, and he only has to clean out the ash about once a month, also no fan is needed
