Oil Filter

Hi, trying to remove the oil filter from my Fiat Ducato motorhome. Problem is - can't get the oil filter off. Using a strap wrench with a 1/2 inch rachet handle. Its so tight that it is squeezing the filter.

So any suggestions eg do jubilee clips tightened around the filter work then tap with hammer.

Put the strap right at the base of the filter.
What does it matter if its squashed anyway, its going in the bin....

I did hear of some idiot doing the bis screwdrives trick and poking a hole in the crank cases of his bike.
Before ramming it home check where it will go afterwards.

I snapped a strap wrench trying to get one off!, chain wrench won in the end although the filter was well crushed

these never fail if u can get them in if not as said a screwdriver

Can never understand why anyone tightens disposable oil filters that much, I never do them up more than hand tight.
Only time I've ever had a problem with this type of filter was on a Ducati 851 bike. Had only had it for a couple of weeks and had just done 40 miles on the M5, arrived home to see the whole back end of the bike wet with oil, including the tyre !! It was dripping from the underside of the fairing like a waterfall !! Had about 1.5 ltrs in the sump from a normal oil quantity of 4.2 ltrs ! I felt a chill run through me thinking how far over I'd had it cranked over on the twisties near my house !! When I had a look for the problem I found the sealing ring on the filter had squeezed out and allowed pressurised oil to spray out. I think the only reason I hadn't been thrown down the road was because I was oblivious of the problem !

no you were just very lucky

whether you knew the oil was on tyre or not wouldnt make it less slippery luck was on your side that day

More than likely ! Thing is, I've experienced a strange phenomina where something can be faulty or failing and it's only when you become conscious of the problem that failure actually occurs but actually it should have failed alot earlier !!
A paradox, like Shrodingers Cat maybe ?!

bit of petrolium jelly on the seal,spin the filter on,when it touches further half to 3/4 turn

next time they can usually be removed by hand

Yup, I use the new oil for the engine, finger dipped in and wiped around the seal.

my best mate filled his fireblade up with oil came out with me and couldnt work out why it stank so much, he hadnt put the little oil cap back on lol lucky it didnt die!

Funniest I have seen was when I fired up a motor for the first time and instantly sprayed 2 gallons of Kendal up the wall, as the filters burst;-)

My brother was fooling with his missus Fiat yesterday, He couldn't get a chain wrench around the filter and had to use the crappy strappy thing. It worked OK, much to his disappointment, he loves hammer a screwdriver into them.

I always use one of them 3 leg oil filter removers ( Like already shown above ) Machine Mart sells them or similar type.

Tried to get one off that twisted off in the middle.
Had to use a flat chisel on the base plate to turn it off.
One of those jobs you remember.
